Texan Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Trouble for Devyani Khobragade as govt finds daughters have both US, Indian passports Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade is under the scanner after the government, it is learnt, found that her two daughters had American passports as well as Indian diplomatic passports — a crime under Indian law as it amounts to dual citizenship. The discovery has caused considerable disquiet as the government took unprecedented retaliatory measures against US diplomats after Khobragade was arrested on charges of visa fraud and allegedly mistreated in New York. Government sources said getting US passports for her daughters indicated Khobragade kept her options open to benefit from the “best of both worldsâ€. Khobragade’s daughters, aged four and seven, are in New York with their father, an American citizen. When contacted, Khobragade, who is posted as director in the MEA’s Development Partnership Administration, refused to comment. According to rules, a diplomat’s spouse is also expected to take up Indian citizenship. If she is a diplomat, any crimes committed by her will be investigated by India. The case is ongoing in Indian courts

That charge is a more serious one in the US. Anyone been through immigration will know this. Underpayment is a crime. Also - you can be strip searched in the US if the officer deems it necessary. even on simple crime of DUI or robbery or hitting someone.

The maid went missing and according to US was 'untraceable'. Indian court informed the US about such risk. Yet US provided visa to her husband against India's wishes. There were lots of things going behind the scenes before her being charged for just under paying the maid

But whether she had diplomatic immunity was in doubt that time. As I said anyone can be strip searched, so it is their call but it is not against the law and they do it regularly against everyone. Indians Russians Mexicans Canadians Brits..everybody. We dont see that because it does not make news. I am talking about small crimes on a daily basis. Cops don't segregate based on nationality. Second point is - she did underpay. Its a huge crime in the US. She later tried to blame the servant of forging the documents. In any such case, the hue and cry made be us on the Indian streets was not justified.
