To me there has never been a better exhibition of batsmanship in England by an Indian batsman than Sunil Gavaskar's classical 221 at the Oval in 1979.Indy had their backs to the wall chasing a mammoth taget of 438 runs to win in the 4th innings which would have been till toady the record 4th innings winning chase. Gavaskar led the classical counter-attack of India who came within 9 runs of acheiving the target.Every bad ball was dispatched for a boundary and every good ball treated on it's merit.Facing 442 balls he did not commit a single mistake.Gavaskar looked like an architect performing his duties to perfection.He revealed great depths of concentration and singleness of purpose.After an arduous tour in which it was outplayed by England for the major part,India made one of cricket's spectacular comebacks.Dubious umpiring decisions cost India a well -deserved win.Gavaskar executed some glorious cover drives and his batting was lesson in the coaching manual .Imagine the pressure he faced when India needed 438 runs to win.It was like a commander ressurecting his troops from the grave.Arguably it was the best post-war double hundred scored in England and the best since Walter Hammond' s 240 in 1938.Had India won the test it may well have ranked amongst Wisden's top 6 innings of all time.

10 best innings by an Indian batsmen in tests in England This is my selection of 10 best Innings by an Indian batsmen in an official tset in England in order of merit.The most controversial are my ranking of Tendulkar's ininsg and of GHavasakr's 101 which he rates as his best knock. 1.Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at the Oval in 1979 An epic innings which was chanceless.Almost enabled India to achieve the record 4th innings winning total.Amongst the top 3 innings ever in a run chase. 2.Sandeep Patil's 129 not out at Old trafford in 1982 Hit Bob Willis for six boundaries in an over and gave a display of classical combination of counter-attack with defence.His strokes were a sight to behold.India were facing a folow on before a big stand of Patil with team -mate Kapil Dev.It is rare to see such a flurry of strokes in a partnership. 3.Rahul Dravid's 148 at Leeds in 2002 Technical mastery at it's best against the moving ball in difficult conditions. 4.Mohammad Azharrudin's 121 at Lords in 1990 One of cricket's classics with the bowling taken to the sword.A brilliant mixture of artistry with agression.One of the best innings ever played at Lords. 5.Dilip Vengsakar's 102 not out at Leeds in 1986 Superbly adapted to a wet track in seaming conditions .Executed some glorious drives all around the wicket. 6.Sachin Tendulkar's century at Edgbaston in 1996. Launched one of batting's best counter onslaughts with classical driving and cutting .Every other batsmen failed. 7.Nawab of Patuadi's 148 at Leeds in 1967 An exhibition of classical counter-attack in difficult conditions. 8.Vinoo Mankad's 184 at Lords in 1952 Displayed classical technique 9.Sachin Tendulkar's century at Trent Bridge in 1996 Displayed great technical mastery. 10.Sunil Gavaskar's 101 at Old trafford in 1974 Superbly negotiated the seaming English conditions.

Everybody remembers the Old Trafford maiden century of Sachin Tendulkar in the second innings.But for me it will be Mohammad Azharuddin inning of 179 in the first innning of the same test match.
