Pretty good budget.
It does sounds impressive to me too on the objectives and plan aspects. At least we know how tremendous the loss has railways been in and why. Also out of 767 projects sanctioned only 317 completed, whereas 359 remain to be completed. I was wondering why just 100 crores are apportioned for for high speed trains. Should have been more if they plan to cover more cities. If they actually manage to implement their plan in next 5 years then it will be great. Promise as usual in each budget. As with every term, whether they fulfill or not is our concern.

We can only hope that this government actually achieves what they have promised today. It also seems clear that FDI will be allowed to invest in the so called PPP mode. That happening we can probably see a better experience with Indian railways on the services aspect.

Can you quantify this statement? Railways is a LOSS! The financial statements are up online for every year. I would like to know how much loss Railways make every day/year.

Lets not post statements, opinions, media bytes etc. There's a reason I mentioned the financial statement in the previous post and NOT news articles. From today's budget Revenue: 164374cr Expenditure : 149176cr Indian Railways is in the green, not red.

Opposition MPs protesting against Railway minister
He is not an MP. He is Mukesh Sharma, was an MLA in Sheila Dixit time. Watch him in some of the live TV debates. Totally retarded. :cantstop: Btw, thats progressive, liberal, tolerant Nehruvian way of protest. :--D

You made the claim it was in loss and suggested some measures for this "loss". I am merely asking to you to quantify that the railways are making a loss. If you followed the Rail Budget today, Gowda clearly mentioned that railways was in a surplus.

While prudent efforts should have been made to address this gap, the tariff policy adopted lacked rational approach . Passenger fares were kept lo wer than costs, thus causing loss in the passenger train operations. This loss kept on increasing from 10 paise per passenger kilometer in 2000-01 to 23 paise in 2012-13, as the passenger fares were kept low always. There has been focus on sanctioning projects rather than completing them. In the last 30 years, as many as 676 projects were sanctioned worth Rs. 1,57,883 crore. Of these, only 317 projects could be completed and 359 projects remain to be completed which will now require as much as Rs. 1,82,000 crore. In the last 10 years, 99 New Line projects worth Rs. 60,000 crore were sanctioned out of which only one project is complete till date. In fact, there are 4 projects that are as old as 30 years, but are still not complete for one reason or another. The more projects we add, the thinner we spread our resources and longer it takes to complete them. If this trend is allowed to continue, many more thousands of crore will get spent yielding hardly any returns, the Minister said
