I actually though Andy Roberts bowled faster. He was clocked at 159

Suddenly 3 years down the line in 1979..Thomson was 148, Roberts 138 & Lilee 136. Doesn't seems correct to me.

 

If we average out the 2 extremes..Thomson's peak pace can be at 154, Roberts at 148 & Lilee at 145..it seems more accurate.

 

I think it was probably 157-158 for thommo, and roberts/marshall were about 150

yes, probably could hit 150, but that's about it. bowling action was not conducive to higher speeds, unlike the slingshot actions of most (though not all) genuine super-quicks: tait, lee, akhtar, thommo, etc

Yes, I was referring to their fastest ever balls, had they been recorded accurately. no one can sustain those avg speeds. thommo was probably late 140s in avg speed, and roberts/holding/marshall probably a little below 145

I doubt it 

 

Starc averages 141 k as his career average speed in tests. And he is the quickest pacer, after Shoaib, Lee and Johnson, who plays tests regularly. 

 

Average speed above 137 kph is quite fast in test cricket in the modern era. And modern era pacers look quicker. 

 

In the 1979 contest, no one could even cross 141 k except Thomson.
