The eye of Sidr, a Category 4 storm, was 667 kilometers south of Kolkata at 11:30 p.m. local time yesterday, according to the latest advisory on the navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center Web site. The storm is moving north at 17 kilometers an hour. Bangladesh authorities ordered thousands of people to evacuate coastal areas around Chittagong, Mongla and Cox's Bazaar and raised the highest alert, Associated Press reported. In India, authorities issued warnings to residents in Kolkata and nearby coastal areas, the Hindu Times said. Northeastern India and Bangladesh are regularly hit by cyclones that form in the Bay of Bengal, bringing flooding and devastation to local communities. A cyclone that hit near Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh left 138,000 people dead in 1991, according to the New York Times. At least one fisherman was killed and about 100 others were listed as missing in the region of Cox's Bazaar after Tropical Cyclone Akash came ashore in May. Sidr is the sixth storm of the north Indian Ocean cyclone season. Storm May Weaken Sidr's winds were gusting to 296 kilometers per hour and waves in the vicinity of the storm's eye were 12 meters (40 feet) high, according to the advisory. The cyclone is expected to maintain strength today before weakening as it approaches Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, and Bangladesh late tomorrow. In the Indian Ocean, the Navy uses the term tropical cyclone to describe all large circular weather systems built around an area of low pressure. That differs from its conventions for the Pacific, where a three-level system is used. Cyclonic storms with winds less than 62 kilometers per hour are classified as tropical depressions, winds between 63 and 118 kilometers per hour are classified as tropical storms and winds of 119 kilometers per hour and greater are typhoons. In the Atlantic, U.S. meteorologists refer to typhoons as hurricanes and classify them according to the five-tier Saffir- Simpson scale. Its a category 4 Hurricane RIGHT NOW, packing 150mph sustained wind speeds. If you think sustained wind speed of 240 kmph is not to be concerned about or can't kill millions, then you need to perhaps VISIT Bengal. That is stronger than Katrina during landfall, okay ? And yes, it can kill millions- Bangladesh is going to take the brunt of it and if you arnt aware how millions EASILY die in bangladesh due to flooding & natural disasters, then you need to read about that aspect a bit more.

I cant remember when was the last time floods caused due to a tropical storm actually killed "Millions" At the worst , a couple of thousands die , millions are displaced. But please dont go around saying "millions" will die. Do you realize the kind of hysteria that could be whipped up if the world knows that, potentially, millions could die in the next few days ? Get real man.

Well , i read your OP , and then visited the BBC weather site to do a double check and this is what it says " Cyclone Sidr heads towards Calcutta " http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ I dont see the word " Category 4 Hurricane " anywhere. And why the heck are you always under the impression that " I am arguing for the sake of it" Its just natural for me to refute whatever you say , if it doesnt make sense to me. And i objected to the word Hurricane because , i have mostly heard of only cyclones occuring in S.Asia. It says the worst casualty figures EVER due to floods in the last 25 years , ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD is 20,000 and you are saying millions may die in this floods. Yes , 500,000 did die in 1970, but that is 1970, this is 2007. There is no way in the planet millions are going to die in our world , due to floods.

I am so so tempted to further expose you and your "knowledge" based debates, but heck, I dont think i should someone like you to force me to reduce my own levels of dignity. And yes Sunderbans are definitely our best bet to ensure not much damage is done to inlands. Here's wishing little, or no if possible, damage.
