NEWSER) – A Canadian woman parked her car on a Montreal-area highway in 2010 to help a group of ducklings; almost four years to the day later, Emma Czornobaj was on Friday found guilty of causing the deaths of a motorcyclist and his passenger daughter who smashed into her car. The jury was unanimous in convicting the 25-year-old on two counts of criminal negligence causing death, a charge that carries a maximum life sentence, and two counts of dangerous driving causing death, which comes with a maximum of 14 years in jail. The Canadian Press reports Andre Roy, 50, who was traveling with his 16-year-old daughter, Jessie, on his Harley-Davidson, was driving an estimated 70mph to 80mph in a roughly 60mph zone. His wife was following behind them at a slower speed and avoided injury, and has said she doesn't blame Czornobaj for the deaths; her husband died in her arms, and her daughter, who was pinned beneath the Honda Civic, died later in a hospital. The AP notes Czornobaj wiped away tears when the verdict was delivered to a packed courtroom; she was released until her pre-sentence hearing on Aug. 8. Czornobaj had stopped her car in the left lane of a provincial highway after spotting roughly seven ducklings on the median, reports CTV. The self-professed animal lover told the court that she did not see the ducklings' mother anywhere and was trying to herd them, with the intention of taking them home. The Montreal Gazette notes that the case is an unusual one, in that Czornobaj faces a life sentence though there was no criminal intent tied to her actions. Life imprisionment is no joke.Just because someone has committed a mistake you can't throw him/her in jail for rest of life..Also what surprises me that when some countries give archiac punishments then whole world laugh at them but these countries which are role models for forward and moderernism can do anything without anyone raising eyebrow

Firstly stories without all the facts are just fiction not truth; there may be more to the story than the headline "Woman who stopped for ducks....." More importantly there are 2 ways to look at it -although I don't agree with a decision a society can be looked as really backward for such a judgment or you can say that it really values a human life. A "mistake" viewed as a 3rd person vs. a view for someone involved who is told that they lost their family because some ducks had to be redirected are very different scenarios. Your comparison with countries giving archaic punishments (Saudi???) may not be valid because the crimes there are sometimes stuff like suspected adultery, disrespect of Koran, "honor" violation etc. etc. & not knowingly breaking clearly explained rules that have been violated leading to loss of lives Like I said don't agree with the court but I can see a different POV

Dude, you CANNOT just stop your car in the left lane of a highway!! :headshake: That is ridiculous. To save some ducklings, she ended up costing two lives. Even though the punishment might sound harsh to some, think about the lady who lost her family for no fault of theirs.

Exactly- you can look at Canada's decision as unfair for someone to be imprisoned for a "mistake" or as the society valuing loss of 2 human lives over "saving" some ducklings

There are tons of accidents ,which happens in India in order to save a stary dogs, cows, etc roaming around . I almost had an accident (I was driving at a speed of about 40kmr) ,when from no where stray goat came jumping from the right side .I had to turn left in order to save the goa,t luckily there was no car or vehical from behind.

Life for a non-intentional crime does seem like total BS anyway you look at it. It should have been treated like an involuntary manslaughter.
