I am proud you are the puritan among us progressives. I have moved on you can watch all the 5 day stuff you want. People use to hand calculate and now they use computers' date=' we all think differently.[/quote'] It is a myth that we don't find time now. We have plenty of time. Facebook, Twitter, Forum activities tell nothing but this. Everyone has plenty of time to visit cricinfo and check scores . Unless you are working in the mines and you have no access to any communication device you should be able to check scores ionce in a while n any job . Much easier than the yesteryears.

Trust me i have more free time in the 21st century than in the 20th century. You think everyone would take 5 days holiday and follow test match? So that is a totally irrelevant point here. If anything access to test score in this era has myriad of ways. Just roll back 40 years. What was the mode of knowing the score? Only option was transistor . Not everyone had one. In the late 90s we received scores through pagers. Then cell phone. NOw you can watch match on cell phone. You can follow live commentary on cricinfo cricbuzz. Technology has evolved so much that you can follow tests without interrupting your work. Exhibit A . Myself. I have two computers. One for office. One for general browsing. i work side by side and follow cricket.
lol, cricket is a spectator sport.. funny how it gets reduced to being a cricinfo scorecard sport. So test criket niches like technique can be dissected looking at online commentary is it?

If it is a spectator, then nobody outside the city where the match is held cannot follow the game since we are not spectators? Isn't it applicable to football all other sports.. only those who are int the stadium are true fans others are not?

What about pre TV era? Even one dayers were not all telecasted.
I thought we were talking about modern sport. pre tv era, we were using typewriters and paper files. Would that mean using typewriters now would be valid as well?

Going by your theory with no TRP rating Test cricket should have died long back lol. But we are playing far more tests than in any other decade ever. What does that tell you? Administrators care for Test matches. They don't care about TRP ratings like you do. If there is no test cricket, cricket will be reduced to a gilli danda sport. Check the Ireland team how desperately want Test status, How Bangladesh doesn't want to lose test status. There are so many no name nations can qualify tnemselves to play ODIs/T20s but not Tests. They don't stand a chance against a decent Test side. You have a very "kunduchattiyil kudirai" vision about cricket and its history. Indian Fix League has corrupteda chennai cricket fan who loves their test like nobody. Even Rickshaw puller used to discuss the nuances of Test cricekt in chennai. :cantstop:

We suck in ODI's abroad too.We havent played too many t20's on fast pitches but if we start sucking at that what will we do,So what will be the newest thing then? Instead of finding the root of the problem, running away from the format will not achieve anything. If the day comes when fans and players have totally lost interest in tests, then what you want will happen by itself

Exactly. We are merely running away from problems and acting like sore losers... As a cricket fan you need respect from international audience not just Indian audience. IFL is there for that. If we keep sucking like this we are going to be butt of jokes . Losing by innings almost regularly.

Welcome to cricket diplomacy. Have always said administrators have no clue. Esp the SC ones, they want to get applauded for "not killing test kirkut" by the whites and accused of "money hungry" by them and what better thing than scheduling more test cricket that nobody really watch? If they really cared, they would've gone out of their way to schedule sufficient number of practice matches before a 5 match test series.

We had 2 or 3 matches. Not our fault some of them got rained out. Anyway they are doing the right thing. Only reason we cannot play five tests is not because of TRP ratings but because we are a pathetic Test side. It is not cricket diplomacy. It is what they care about. They drafted it long back.

Nobody is interested in 5 day match and how many 5 day matches have you watched in full? I personally dont have the patience or time and inclination to waste 5 days.

Quiet a few. But it also depends on my timing. If it affects my sleep i won't watch anything. But going to ground is not possible everyone. I grew up in a small village far away from chennai. But i would go to local collecge matches, school matches. You realize it is not possible for everyone to watch match live. Test matches sometimes crowd builds up depends on what happens on the ground. For instance in 1998 moment they realized Sachin was going great guns, chepauk started overflowing. Same with virus 300. ALso when India is likely to win you could see more crowd. During week days day time it is hard to find crowd even for One dayers. But day night matches you can spare time for one dayers. Has this conceptt changed suddenly post 2000? Been that way for decades.

People who defend test cricket ardently are all basically believers of the notion of "old is gold". Sure, old times can be aspiring for some today, but test cricket simply aren't cut out to be part of modern day. Test cricket is modelled as a gentleman's game, a bunch of middle aged men enjoying their 5 days of outdoor game. It is all male oriented. Today, such concept is not possible. Today, team sports are meant to connect different ages, genders, race groups. You want all sectors of society following the game, where one can take their family or female friends to watch the game. T20 in cricket stands for such idea of inclusive sport. Whereas, a sport like test cricket defines elitism.

There is sas bah serial for ,someone, like such people lol you can cry from the rooftop. Administrators have given long finger to those who live in ,'modern era' :hysterical: what an era I woke up with a dream - FB message. Wow what an advanced era where you can't find time. Yet keep replying to ICF posts which does not have great. TRP,ratings.

I think many here consider on ground spectators as total number of test fans. By that logic there are only few hundred test cricket fans in the whole world going by some matches. Have to disagree that fan following is counted in such way.

No, I don't believe we have TRP ratings for test cricket anywhere comparable to ODIs or T20s, and quite honestly with stalwarts especially Sachin gone, a huge chunk of population have actually stopped caring for test cricket. Well, I quite frankly agree with you that we have a rubbish touring test side. And that's exactly what I have been talking about. Is that something to be really ashamed of? Or is that a byproduct of the changed focus and market dynamics? Young guns are preferring (and rightly so) the shorter formats - so it is obvious that the longer format is going to suffer, isn't it? Is it a bad thing? I don't think so. It's like saying we are absolutely rubbish in ice skiing or winter sports or ice hockey. And yes, it is cricket diplomacy when a 5 match test series is crammed into 40-45 days, with absolutely no time in between for touring teams to adapt to different conditions and adjust - or with touring games interspersed which allows struggling players to regain some sort of form. That isn't the way to play 5 match test series. Check Ashes.

Wrong. Ashes matches are almost nearly all sold out. And we are talking about stadiums like MCG. Because test cricket, especially Ashes is a part of sporting culture in those country. A sport that claims to be popular need to atleast have on ground attendance. I'd say as a spectator sport, that's it prime benchmark.

It has. That's what has been the premise of anti test match arguments all along. In 1980s, my uncle and his friends used to take a train from Kerala and go to Chennai to watch a test match. That was devotion and following. Now, even if you're in Mylapore and the ground is just a 4 minute train ride away, hardly anybody cares. Still Chennai being Chennai, matters are slightly better. But talk about an IPL match, and the clamour for tickets start months early.
