rkt.india Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Head coach of the Indian cricket team, Zimbabwe-born Duncan Fletcher, has been given sufficient hints, during a conference call early on Tuesday, by top Indian cricket board officials that his services are no longer valued and he is free to resign. Rahul Dravid, the former India skipper, is being pursued to take up the role of team mentor in the near future. An official, who participated in the deliberation to appoint former all-rounder Ravi Shastri as the director of the Indian cricket team, told The Indian Express on Wednesday that the ‘Board of Control for Cricket in India expected Fletcher to resign after the England tour’, which also includes five One-dayers and one T20 International. Bowling coach Joe Dawes and fielding coach Trevor Penney, both rested according to the BCCI statement on Tuesday, are likely to be sacked once they submit their respective reports about the 1-3 loss to England. Fletcher’s role has already been undermined after the reins of the Indian team was handed over to the newly-appointed director, Shastri, for the ODIs. But the influence of the 65-year-old coach, who came with the reputation for being a sound judge when it came to batting techniques, is likely to be further undermined as the BCCI is in talks with Dravid. The former India skipper and No.3 batsman was the first choice, even ahead of Shastri, but he cited prior professional and personal commitments as a reason for not taking up a position with the Indian team at short notice. “Fletcher himself has to decide what his future will be. He is a professional and we are paying him a good amount. So it is natural to expect big results from him. We don’t doubt his cricketing knowledge but we need someone who can also communicate well with the boys and also motivate them to become mentally tougher. We have options when it comes to appointing new coaching staff. Enough feelers have been sent to Fletcher in the last meeting and the BCCI will be expecting him to resign after England tour,†the official said. If Dravid takes up the role of mentor, he is likely to be with the team till the 50-over World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand in February-March next year. “Dravid is attached to the Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming Champions League. However, we have big plans for Rahul. We want him to be the permanent mentor of the Indian team. He understands these players like nobody else and the players respect him also. We will ask him to take up the role during the home series against West Indies and also when the team travels to Australia for the Test series,†the official added. Incidentally, Dravid took up a brief role as mentor of the Indian team ahead of the first Test versus England at Trent Bridge while Sunil Gavaskar has on more than one occasion asked the BCCI to make Dravid the Indian coach. So it is now after so many whitewashes and embarrassing losses both at home and away that they realize that they need someone who communicates well and motivates the players As for Fletcher being given hints to resign himself - he, along with M$D, has been given such a long rope that he is now shameless. I don't expect him to resign so I hope he (and M$D) is sacked.

He played for India in mid 80s and has worked with players at NCA. Though as an Indian bowling coach, I would have preferred TA Shekhar or Subroto Bannerjee. They both have good technical knowledge.

Sridhar, BCCI’s General Manager, Cricket Operations, changed all that. Soon, Arun’s mobile was ringing non-stop. And he was rushing to get his visa done in time for his departure to England on Thursday. In the evening, Arun was at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium complex — he is the Director of coaching at the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s Academy — striving to get things organised during his absence. The BCCI’s dramatic announcement in its effort to arrest the Indian team’s alarming slide in the Ol’ Blighty meant Arun was now one of the National side’s two assistant coaches. The former India Test all-rounder said to The Hindu, “It is a wonderful opportunity. It is also a great challenge. I am looking forward to it.” Impressive management The 51-year-old Arun’s record as coach — his man-management has often come in for praise — is impressive. He held the top job in the Tamil Nadu side from 2002 to 2006. “The team reached the Ranji Trophy final twice apart from winning the inter-State all India one-day tournament on two occasions,” said Arun. After a brief stint with Bengal, Arun moved to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) as its Chief bowling coach. Between 2008 and 2010, he guided the India ‘A’ side, which won three quadrangular series titles in Australia during this period. Then, he was given the responsibility of coaching the India under-19 team. In a tremendous run, the side triumphed in eight successive tournaments including the 2012 World Cup down under — the team’s preparation included a three-day boot camp near Bangalore where diverse methods such as rappelling were used — and two Asia Cups. The winning streak only ended in the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Dubai. On his outlook to coaching, Arun said to this correspondent some time back, “The coach’s job is to bring balance and stability to a cricketer’s game without changing his natural style. A coach cannot look at the perfect picture, but has to seek a method that would suit a cricketer best.” Arun added, “Instructing a cricketer to follow a rigid method is limiting his mind and skill. You got to support him to discover himself as a player. Dravid isnt there yet. After this series. Shashtri is appointed just for this series. Arun is the bowling coach and Sridhar is fitness and fielding coach. Bangar will be assistant to Dravid if Dravid takes over Duncan or for that matter of they appoint a new coach.
