Yes, that's my finding is after spending hours. I got an AC router to check and it's awesome but Range is a problem for AC router. It's amazing that I go from 100 to 8 Mbps by walking only 50-60 ft. I guess I need one with couple of external antennas
get a 11n router with 3x3 instead of a 11ac ... provides a better reach & upto 150Mbps

So shall I use the N router as it should be fast enough or shall I go for AC. The positive is that if I use AC then my connection speed with the network hard drive should improve, right now it's pretty bad and I can barely use it over the net for large files or backing up MacBook. The disadvantage of AC: it's much more expensive, I won't have speeds of more than 300 for a while and even if I do, it won't be of much use. Plus it's more expensive
Get Ac for future proofing and remember direct transfer of files will be quicker also things like wireless sync

Epic fail... all these routers that I am getting are pretty good at speed but the speed goes down by 10% for every 8 ft, btw time I get to the bedroom, the speed is almost 1 Mbps. With the old netgear router I get 11 times that at the same distance :wall: I might have to get an AC router with antenna else its basically useless.

How big is ur house man ?:nervous: Jokes aside get one with most range my friend has router which he uses on 2 nd floor and wifi is in room on ground floor ...so just keep searching I will find good one

I know but no router ever states the area they cover, I guess if it doesnt have an external antenna then its not really worth the try.

I think this will be more than sufficent for him right ? I mean will it max out his connection on wireless ?
nope.. that chart is a comparision of normalised values. Its better to have a fallback option to 2.4G band to see if there is interference in the band you use

if his access speed is less than 150Mbps, then 11n is sufficient

It's around 100 mbps will his laptop get anywhere close to this?
It gets a bit technical.. 11n 3x3 can theoretically support 450Mbps. 3 spatial streams of data each with a capacity of 150Mbps, & the rate falls exponentially with distance. Not only that, the receiver(laptop) should have the ability to concurrently receive these 3 . He should get 100M if he is within 30ft,beyond that it depends on the channel profile (his house characteristics)
