Yeah 58% voted No in Aberdeen. Then again, a lot of expats live in Aberdeen who weren't expected to vote Yes. On a brighter note, I will now get a pay rise! I am off to the rigs on Monday so looking forward to the banter. 45-55 is by no means a small difference and Glasgow, the dock workers heartland voted majority Yes for Independence.

Predictable result and a huge waste of taxpayer's money, IMO. Shwetabh, leaving aside all the historical stuff- I can't be arsed to speak up for Churchill or Mountbatten, it's been 67 years since independence for FFS, and guys here need to move on from Mother India's tits - the referendum confirmed four home truths for me, stuff I have long suspected. Firstly, people need an excuse to waste time. Lots of chaps got into the bandwagon on the Yes side in particular, who didn't have the foggiest what was going on, simply because they needed the vicarious pleasure of belonging to a cause. I believe most rebellions, agitations, jihads in the world are largely fanned by bored folks, mostly young men, who need a release from their dreadfully boring, unproductive lives where the highlight is the nightly jacking off. Secondly, and this is probably connected to my first point- all social media is just junk. People who post on social media are addicts, and they are only sliding deeper into addiction trying to make points and win worthless pseudo-debates. Social media in the UK was dominated 2:1 by the Yes camp. They lost. The silent Scotsmen and women, who never confided in a soul, carried the day. Thirdly, journalists have no clue, not a ****ing clue. I read lots of analyses on how the race was going to be close, lots of predictions on why the Yes side was going to come out trumps and various other doomsday type scenarios for the UK and even Europe. It's quite clear that these guys, many of whom write for widely circulated newspapers, were making it up as they went along. It's always like this with this lot. IMO, all media- newspapers, magazines and TV, are an absolute waste of time. Call in all those subscriptions, willya?. Fourthly, politicians all over the world are dimwits. They follow events rather than lead, react rather than be proactive. Where do you start? They backed the wrong side in Syria, ignored the rabble-rousing by Salmond until one freak poll set the cat among the pigeons and then overreacted by promising too much. Which leads me to reconfirm what I've always known- most professions not based on science are a waste of space. These guys might well make a living, give fancy speeches and delude the gullible people who populate point number 1, but in reality, they are just marking time. Science based pursuits are the only ones worth spending the rest of your life at- the rest are tosh.

Dhondy, I think you misconstrued my post. It was not a support for Scotland's independence, but more of a pointing out a false analogy between Scotland and Kashmir. I pretty much agree with the rest of your points above. Specially the one about people not pursuing science as wasting their time. However that horizon is huge and places where science is least expected to apply is where it has the greatest value add because the threshold is so low.
