BeautifulGame Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 The Sunday Times suggests that it will be 51% YES to independence. However, another poll carried out by Panelbase for Yes Scotland found that no is leading 52% to 48% when undecided voters are excluded. Eitherway it seems extremely close and can go either way with YES gaining more and more.Wonder what the opinions of the UK ICFer's about the referendum and an independent Scotland? http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/07/scottish-independence-ten-days-to-go-vote-uk
undisputed chap Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Dont know why thet are calling it independence ?
HIC_NAA Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 For an Indian currently in UK, my only issue would be that i would need a Scottish Visa if i need to go from UK to Scotland.
sachin34357 Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 For an Indian currently in UK' date=' my only issue would be that i would need a Scottish Visa if i need to go from UK to Scotland.[/quote'] i doubt it even if you are not a British citizen. for british citizens, it'll remain an open border
sachin34357 Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Dont know why thet are calling it independence ? independence from westminster
Precambrian Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Meh, ECB would just need a bit of additional paperwork.
The-Ramones Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 This will be a big blow for UK. GBP is already taking a hit.
gattaca Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 This will be a big blow for UK. GBP is already taking a hit. Hola Amigo. Mexicans in Uk as well ?:woot:
North Sea Tiger Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 For an Indian currently in UK' date=' my only issue would be that i would need a Scottish Visa if i need to go from UK to Scotland.[/quote'] No you won't. The SNP is lobbying for a Common Travel Area for travel between Independent Scotland and rUK. This will be similar to the Schengen agreement in the EU. As for Independence itself, the mood out here has long been favouring independence. Even in a Labour/Unionist city where I live in has a vast majority of Yes voters. It might hurt what remains of the UK if Scotland vote for Independence as it contributes about 9% of the GDP currently plus also offsets the current account deficit by about 4% of the GDP from North Sea Oil. Interesting times.
Dhondy Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Scotland will vote "No" of course, but the damage is done. They have shot themselves in the foot on this one. International investors will remember what happened to Quebec (2nd referendum after 15 years), and avoid Scotland like the plague. Business hates uncertainty. You'd understand if they were trying to secede from Argentina or Russia. But to ask for separation from a country widely viewed as the fairest, most tolerant, most liberal in Europe, is senseless. Who's to say they won't ask for a plebiscite again in 5 years time? You only have to take a look at Falklands or Gibraltar or at the mass of Eritreans and Iraqis risking their life at Calais to cross over into Britain from France, and you begin to comprehend the madness, the utter, depraved self propagating selfishness of the SNP that underlies this. Quebec never recovered from those plebiscites. It has been consistently one of the poorest provinces of Canada ever since 1980. The same fate awaits Scotland. England will be the beneficiary, perhaps even Wales and Northern Ireland.

That is the reason why parties like UKIP thrive in England and Scotland wan't to breakaway from rUK. Scotland will vote No? I don't think so from what I am seeing out here. http://radicalindependence.org/2014/08/19/radical-independence-campaign-18k-canvass-sample-released/ The above poll shows reactions from areas in Scotland where the usual online polls like YouGov or TNS don't go. The poorer areas. As you can see the support for Independence is overwhelming in these areas.

I didnt know that about Quebec and it is an interesting parrallel. Im not sure if Scotland would suffer the same fate -knowing nothing about Quebec- but just given the relative strength of Scotlands economic position. Even if the he big financial services firms will relocate south taking jobs with them, there is oil and the Whiskey :P I dont think it is a given that the Scots will vote No. And If they choose to leave it will be tough for a few years at least. Salmond paints a picture of Scotland being the new Norway with a bonanza of oil wealth - who knows what the future holds on that front. On the currency front isnt the most likely route that they set up their own central bank and currency - that is a stipulation for them to join to EU too If I am not mistaken... and that's another question, very possible that Spain for one votes against Scots joining the EU
mishra Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Among Yes or No only certainity is Non Scottish and Non Londoner will be worse off
Sachin=GOD Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 A Foreign Office spokesman has said “independent legal opinion sought and published by the UK government” had clarified that the UK would continue on existing terms and Scotland would be an entirely new state. But there is one huge caveat to this: UK membership of the security council is dependent on Scotland not declaring that both countries are new states. If Alex Salmond wants a bargaining chip over currency or anything else, he has a big one. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/09/-sp-if-scotland-votes-for-independence-key-questions?CMP=twt_gu :hmmm: BTW I think Scotland will vote YES.
Crookbond Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Sushma Swaraj reaction to Scottish Independence - "God forbid!" with few seconds pause after gaining composure "It is for Scotland to decide".
hhunaeh Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Sushma Swaraj reaction to Scottish Independence - "God forbid!" with few seconds pause after gaining composure "It is for Scotland to decide". Why the ""God Forbid"? Is it of any concern to India? Is it an economic concern?
Crookbond Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Why the ""God Forbid"? Is it of any concern to India? Is it an economic concern? According to her, it could fuel separatist elements in India. In reality, another one of those FUDs. Some 18-year old kid (son of a BJP State Secretary) is even arguing for that ludicrous claim.
Texan Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Interesting that it will only take a simple majority to decide on independence. Considering how close the recent opinion polls are, could it go down to one vote?
