Malcolm Merlyn Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Acknowledging the proxy war that Pakistan has been engaging in to fight India's 'superior' military, a term that was also mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Pentagon has brought to the attention of the US Congress Pakistan's use of militant groups as proxies. Herat "Afghan - and India - focused militants continue to operate from Pakistan territory to the detriment of Afghan and regional stability. Pakistan uses these proxy forces to hedge against the loss of influence in Afghanistan and to counter India's superior military," the Pentagon told the Congress in its latest report 'Progress Towards Security and Stability in Afghanistan'. The report cites the terrorist attack on the Indian consulate in Herat in Afghanistan in May, which came just ahead of Modi taking charge as the prime minister. "In May of this reporting period, the Indian consulate in Herat Province was attacked by a group of four heavily armed militants. The attack came three days prior to the swearing-in of the new Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi is perceived as being close to Hindu nationalist groups, a fact that may have played into the timing of the attack," the Pentagon said. "In June, the US department of state announced that the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba was responsible for the attack,' it added. LET is a Pakistan-based terror group, closely associated with Hafiz Saeed, who India considers as the mastermind behind the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. PM Modi had earlier condemned Pakistan's inability to check terrorism and had said that it had lost its ability to fight a "conventional war". "The neighbouring country has lost the strength to fight a conventional war, but continues to engage in the proxy war of terrorism," Modi said in August during his maiden trip to Leh, adding that more Indian armed forces have been succumbing to acts of terror than war. Pentagon also suggested that Pakistan's 'relationships' with militant groups is detrimental to regional stability, especially in neighbouring Afghanistan. "These relationships run counter to Pakistan's public commitment to support Afghan-led reconciliation. Such groups continue to act as the primary irritant in Afghan-Pakistan bilateral relations," the Pentagon said in its 100-page report. It further said that India continued to root for a stable and secure Afghanistan. I think Ayub Khan it was who said Pakistanis will eat grass but fight hindu India...The first part will come true the moment US,UN and IMF stop lending money and ask for repayment. However, I feel the issue is more than land. Pakistan is still searching for an identity...Arabs treat them like labourers and Muslims ( all sects ) are in much better shape in India excelling in many departments. So it is a deep rooted inferiority complex coupled with religious fanaticism introduced by Zia that is making it wage all these proxy wars. India should be more vigilant as we have more to lose than them.

So you actually needed a certificate from Mushy to establish that Pak is involved in a proxy war? Every Tom, Dick, Harry, Cow, Crow, Dog, Rock, Sea and even the inhabitants of Mars know it. Regarding the Pakis -- if some how Prophet Mohammed comes out and says that --"Pakistan is in involved in a proxy war" -- you will see Pakistan becoming a majority Hindu nation overnight !

Yesterday in Pakistan, a Christian couple were beaten to death by a group of angry fanatics. They were being accused of desecrating and dishonoring the Koran. Take another recent incident, which caused international concern: A Taliban suicide bomber targeted a crowd attending a military parade at the Wagah border, killing 55 people and injuring scores of other people. Killing innocent children, helpless women, and marginalized minorities has become a daily affair in Pakistan. Pakistan is paying a price for nurturing fundamentalist groups, who are now turning their anger on the Pakistani society itself. It is now facing a danger from within, which looms so large that it is high time the world community pays some attention to what might happen if this goes uncontrolled. India’s neighbouring country was conceived by its founding fathers as a potential secular country. How secular is Pakistan today? It is completely engrossed in intractable conflicts. Let’s call a spade a spade. Most states in the world have an army. Pakistan is fast becoming a state owned by an army that wants to monopolize its defense and foreign policy. Its army is India-centric, and while India is trying to reach Mars, Pakistan´s army is busy trying to enter India to revamp the entire history of South Asia. Why attempt an implausible mission? When I lived in India, I knew men, young, smart and intelligent, getting carried away by a dream of marrying a Bollywood celebrity, but most of them realize after a few years of infatuation that it is an impossible mission. Most of them settled down with a girl with whom they could establish real contact instead of daydreaming of a girl with whom it is impossible to create a relation. Why get so obsessed with India? After all, the two nations are the same people, India is just more multicultural, and luckily in India there is more freedom of speech. But isn´t dialogue a way forward? Why does Pakistan’s army get furious and does all it can to hinder Pakistani politicians from establishing a warmer relationship with India? As we enter a post-Nato Afghanistan era, where we will see a serious and gradual withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, Pakistan´s army wants to even up by re-establishing its stronghold in the tribal areas of the border regions. In its more than 60 years’ young history, Pakistan has been governed directly or manipulated by its army for more than half the time. Western countries have a major responsibility here if they want peace to prevail in South Asia. Whether it is Republicans or Democrats who dominate the American Senate, there is one issue that can possibly create a bi-partisan approval. It is addressing the issue of letting Pakistan once again become a safe haven for Taliban and Al-Queda. I see no other option but to monitor all aid, loans and other assistance and make it mandatory for Pakistan to rein in fundamentalist groups, who do not want girls to go to school, force men to grow beards and stop them from listening to music. No Western societies approve of such ideologies at home, then why indirectly promote them abroad? Let me ask in all humbleness: When are the Pakistanis going to get bored by these fundamentalist ideologies? Isn´t it time for Pakistan to grow up, stand up to the ideals of its founding fathers, who did not want religion to be the identity-forming and defining force? Pakistan has to do some real soul-searching. Meanwhile, China and USA should channelize their precious economic resources into improving children´s education in science, and not escalate the funds for the army, whose generals can sip more whiskey while more funds get drained away from hospitals.
