Cricketics Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I have followed the game since childhood for over 20 years and I have never seen the whole cricketing world come so close together and sharing the same opinion and just sharing the sadness together. As much as Philip Hughes will be missed by all, it's great to see everyone come together in this time of mourning. There were moment of silence everywhere I am hearing. Pakistan vs New Zealand game was postponed, something which hasn't happened ever before. Now seeing pictures on twitter about how games in ICC division games in florida, USA started late and players had a 2 minute silence for PHIL. I heard Indian team was training when they heard the news and they had a minute silence for PHIL right away and eventually cancelled the training. It's been just a sad day and that was the least one can do for Phil Hughes family.
Cricketics Posted November 27, 2014 Author Posted November 27, 2014 Some tributes all around the world
rkt.india Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Worst tragedy in cricket at least for me for last 20 years from the time, I got attached to the game.
tweaker Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 NZ & Pakistan mutually agreed to cancel the 2 day as a tribute to Phil Hughes.

Those were different times and he was not a young international cricketer. Therefore that did not get as much publicity but the it was equally heart breaking.

He used to be too daring in real life and that eventually accounted for his life playing cricket.
Crookbond Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Another point with Raman Lamba was that we had no video footage. The ability of the mind to attract towards images, videos is quite extra ordinary. We draw emotional reactions to images and videos which sometimes text does not capture. Also, social media helps in spreading the word quickly.

Precambrian Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Lamba's act was a suicide. I It was not. Don't be so idiotic.

And lack of images and general social media, not to mention non proliferation of internet and absence of various TV channels (back in 1998) meant that the coverage was limited to Doordarshan, AIR and newspapers.
BlueBee Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I never felt like what I'm feeling now. This is some bad bad feeling
Brainfade Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 It was not. Don't be so idiotic. I think he meant that it was suicidal of him to stand at short leg with no helmet. Not that he intended to commit suicide.
rkt.india Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 It was not. Don't be so idiotic. Wasn't it suicidal to field at shortleg without helmet? Who does that? Players dont want to be at that place even with all the security equipments, so, it was utter stupidity on his part. Was very unfortunate but that could have been avoided. There is a very thinline between being brave and being fool.

There is a very thinline between being brave and being fool. Insensitive. Can that be said of Hughes who decided to use a faulty older design instead of newer design which could've saved his life? Can one say Hughes' methodology was wrong and he was stupid attempting that shot without having judged the pace? Raman lost his life in a mishap as equally bad as Hughes. It's absolutely pathetic to see people trying to compare mishaps and say one is better than the other. Inhuman really.

No helmet covers neck where the ball was hit. Raman Lamba's incident was as unfortunate. Not comparing, just telling that could easily have been avoided with basic safety.

Crookbond Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 ^ That assumes that in the moving position Hughes are of impact on the neck wouldn't be exposed. Given the position Hughes was, I don't think the helmet would have stood a chance.
FischerTal Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 wear a baseball catchers helmet, that will cover every part of the body
Crookbond Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 wear a baseball catchers helmet' date=' that will cover every part of the body[/quote'] Fun fact - The first helmet worn was by Dennis Amiss (also the first player to score a ODI hundred) in the 1970s WSC to protect himself against fast bowling. The helmet was a modified motorcycle version helmet which blocked the ears and hence one couldn't hear. This essentially led to the design of the modern day equestrian style helmet. Some batsmen who wore helmets initially were booed and mocked for cowardice.
