Green pitch/seaming pitch... Indian batsmen will fail when they travel abroad.... atleast with turning tracks, we can unearth some good spinners and our batsmen will start learning how to play these Ali's, Lyons and Panesars properly .....

I dont understand before people were crying we dont produce quality pace bowlers because the pitches are too flat and dry and when we put some grass to assist them people say its preventing us from producing quality spinners.Cant win.What do we want.

Because such pitches also encourage mediocre seamers who are found wanting at higher levels. These pitches are normally slow does not encourage pace, green with lot of moisture. We need balanced pitches, neither ultra dust bowls nor green mambas. Need harder pitches.

Some good points with regards to the balance of the pitches in domestics. It's always a challenge to get that perfect pitch offering something for everybody. The ball can do a lot in the mornings, especially as the winter sets in some parts. But many teams are also pushing for a victory and the groundsmen prepare such pitches to get a result. Some of these pitches are tougher than the international ones for the batsmen. Ranji is 4 days in the group stages and 5 days in the knockouts. With the way the domestic fixtures are cramped, I think it is fine with 4 days in the group stages. Anyways 4 days is pretty much the standard if i'm not mistaken around the world. Otherwise, they'll need to add another 16 days to Ranji (1 for the 5th day and 1 day extra for rest in between games). Tbh, half a month doesn't sound that much of big deal. They'll need to take out one of the other tournament like the t20 one.

I think a lot of the Ranji pitches/conditions offer good practice for preparation of the England tours i.e swing but don't offer the bouncier tracks for the preparation for tours to Australia or South Africa.

I think more than the pitches, the problem is the dilution of talent in Ranji. It's been said many times here that Ranji is not a high enough standard of competition to be 1 below international level. Until the administrators focus on that first, then the pitches are not going to make much difference.

Yeah that's one option. Another option is to turn IPL into a full fledged domestic competition, with 4-day and 1-day matches as well. Franchises would be allowed to buy international players only for the T20 tournament. You could even give incentives for winning the 4-day tournament such as $1m extra in the next auction. The advantage I see with the latter option is that the marketing and branding side of things is already taken care of. I think it could rejuvinate domestic cricket in India.

do you think the BCCI will reduce number of teams ? Wasnt this idea mooted by the technical committee headed by Kumble/Ganguly to have 3 divisions with teams moving back & forth based on their performance in the season to increase the competition level?

I don't like the idea of the having different divisions. The reason is that good players in mediocre teams will be stuck in a lower division. You need a tiered system, where Ranji is a stepping stone for players to get to the next level.

Yeah that's the sad state of Indian cricket. The administrators don't want to improve our results.
