has anyone here heard of haleem? i had it in a pakistani owned restaurant in ny called haandi and i have to say it is among the best things ive ever had. never thought there could be anything which i might enjoy close to how i enjoy biryani but that haleem changed my view. i wish it was available in any of the restaurants in philly.

Veggie Biryani can be made well Hyderbadi style by layering veggies partially cooked in spices and yoghurt with layers of rice and topping it with Saffron. We had a Nepali cook who was making food for us and she used to make Veg Biryani using above technique and it was pretty good. Ofc being pure vegetatrian, I have not tasted Mutton Biryani to compare it with, but I am a taste freak and it passed my bar. Similar to the video below: zf0_AJfp5AA

It gets exported to UAE during Ramzan :two_thumbs_up: If it is not Hyderabadi - it is not Haleem :winky:

Not sure but as Rajiv said, it is not popular all over India. Only Hyderabad. Also, it is time consuming to prepare ( 12-24 hrs ). You will get it in some Hyderabadi restaurants like Pista house ( exported all over the world ) 7676642582_c449ef5890.jpg

I learned to cook sprouted beans a year ago. That's the only thing I can cook other than maggi and only I can eat them. I try other things at times, after watching youtube videos, after doing all the steps as they say. After all this I taste it and start cursing myself ..what the **** have you made.

Veg Pulao is milder' date=' Veg Biryani is stronger with spices and aroma. I like them both.[/quote'] Point is that it's originally a meat based dish- veggie is a modern variant.

Most probably that Pakistani restaurent cooked biryani in mutton or beef stock.Years ago one of my uncle was known for mischeivous nature . He used to put meat stock in vegetables or dal which he cook. and vegetarians in family used to say what a great taste :cantstop:

When did I say it originated here? No one knows where any dish originated. All we have is theories and dishes are always customized locally. Dont know what the problem is :dontknow:

You are Pakistani right, you must have noticed completely diff menu in a typical Pakistani restaurant where main dishes include kebabs, haleem and bhiryani items. Most Indian restaurants ( especially outside India are North Indian based ) - mostly to cater to gora crowd but noticed UK has lot options but elsewhere its the same north indian based menu During my 3 month stay in Jackson Heights, NY ( back in 1996 ), I had Pakistan roomies and we used to get bheja masala, haleem, kaleji and kebabs ( loved it but killer for the heart ) One thing is I have noticed, Pakistani cuisine adds meat to every dish ( even with bhindi ) - now thats something really odd

nah im from india (delhi). my moms family are muslims and mostly from pakistan and punjab but not on good relations so only met them a few times. but i eat a lot of north indian/ mughlai food. youre right. muslim food in general has a lot of meat (pakistani or indian). i feel in NY atleast pakistani restaurants are better than indian ones on purely a taste basis. Indian ones are more high end but much less authentic and not as strict in good taste and quality. but they are more high end generally.
