This is really horrible, been following Ranji Team this year and fast bowling stock is Dry and empty, just very much surprise to see so far not single bowler who could bowl 140+ forget about doing it consistently not even a few balls at that speed consider so much training, facility and coaching you get these days. There got be other reason for this which we may not know may be too much corruption at the lower level I am saying this because I know for sure there has to be tons of bowlers who could hit that mark consistently this is because recently I was playing at the indoor facility here in Toronto which has speedo meter posted at the nets and while I was bowling my speed was coming in the range 115-119K and I am 38 now definitely I was much quicker when I was 25-26 and there were whole lot of bowlers playing for my college and University who were much quicker then me 12-15 years ago and this is just in the south gujarat area can't Imagine whole of India none is fast enough to bowl at 140K, BCCI really need to do some thing about this situation otherwise don't send team to away tours else get humiliated every time we go. what is happening to cricket academy at the zonal levels What your guy's observation is the cupboard really empty or gems are hidden under the dirt just need to discover and polish them?

You raise a very valid point. There are very few domestic pacers who can bowl more than 25% of their deliveries bove 130 k even. Most common speeds are 122 k to 128 k maybe. This is not natural . I have observed a similar thing in Kolkata. Whenever pacers are bowling in local matches, they bowl with effort and many of them look quick. But, if and when they start training professionally , in clubs and train under coaches...they look much much slower. I don't know why but there is some problem with bowling coaching in India at all levels.

West Indies has many bowlers who can clock that speed. Don't think they are smashing all oppositions. If you ask Dale Steyn to bowl in Ranji Trophy don't think he will waste his energy bowling 145k deliveries when he can get wickets with 135k deliveries. This random search puresly based on magic number of 145k, 150k will get us nowhere. Genuine express pace bowlers are self-modelled. They are obsessive about that like Akhtar, Lee, Tait, . Not a single bowler can match even 50% of MJ's fitness in our country. Even MJ is dropping speed these days. It is a thankless job. Idea of express pace bowlers work when they take wickets. If they don't take wickets match after match and they bowl longer and longer spells they will break down and reduce the speed. You have to have a strike rate somewhere in the range of 45 to be an effective express pace bowler. We don't have anyone in that category.

I don't think the OP is talking about express bowlers. Ability to touch 140 k once in a while is not even fast. Most good international pacers have the ability to bowl a good % of deliveries between 135 to 142 k ....and do so accurately. This is just fast-medium bowling ...not really quick by any stretch of imagination. Our domestic cricket should have quite a few pacers in atleast that pace range.

Reaching 140 km/h isn't that fast and most our bowlers can't even do that. And of course, pace isn't everything. But our bowlers aren't fast or accurate.

I don't think it is an either/or as far as pace and accuracy are concerned. We need some 135k + pacers who are accurate. Erratic 145 k pacers or accurate 123k pacers are rarely good bowlers.

Disheartening situation really. Almost every bowler in leagues around the world such as Big bash, Ram slam etc bowls around 140k. There's no encouragement for fast bowlers in this country. Most of the coaching academies don't even have speed guns. Its not just the pitches, there's no fast bowling culture. Coaches condition the pacers at an early age to become line and length bowlers as if there is negative correlation between speed and accuracy. Fitness training also plays a role but I guess that is improving but its the mindset that has to change. Forget the coaches even the supporters are not really appreciative of fast bowling. Some boundaries get conceded and the fast bowlers are labelled 'wayward' , 'spray guns'. Even the Indian commentary box is filled with guys like Manjrekar that seem to detest fast bowlers. On the other hand guys like Warne show more encouragement. It is a lot different in other countries. For instance, Lehman has not long back said that 140k is the minimum that he expects from fast bowlers and was one of the reasons why Siddle was dropped. You'll never see that happen in India. Unless we are supportive of genuine quick bowlers, this appalling situation is not going to change.

Rubbish pitches where ball stop a bit is also a contributory factor. Express pace will play right into the hands of batsmen on such pitches. Controlled slower pace might work better there as you are more likely to mistime such balls in comparison with express balls which will nicely sit up. Strength and stamina is another aspect. To take pitch out of the equation you need to bowl full . Bowling full will take a lot out of you. Bowl full and at pace with swing. Only one guy who kinda exhibited what we are looking for was Shami against West Indies with old ball. He bowled full on target with swinging deliveries. That is the kind of bowling is needed pace, accuracy and late swing. All three have to work ball after ball to become a successful strike bowler. That is what express bowler has to start with then start using bouncers and slow balls to become less predictable. That is how you develop. Unfortunately these bozos look like spraying the ball around for the rest of their life no matter how much experience they gain.

made a thread abt this a month or so ago on how majority of pacers in ranji and othe r domestic formats barely go above 130k
Did you see the chennai pitch where TN and Mumbai played. i would say street mud road would look like mosaic in comparison with that.

Why the FECK would anyone bother to bowl fast when they see Varun Aaron and the treatment he has been meted out for having a few bad games. Lost spot in WC squad and was replaced with daddy ka ladlaa Binny.

Pitches, training, coaches are all good reason but that is for those who are already selected problem with the current lot is that none of them looks like bowling 140K and they don't have it in them to bowl fast, In my post earlier point I was trying to make was that correct bowlers are not being selected at the lower levels and this is probably wide spread corruption that doesn't get notice at lower level. BTW, all about accuracy and swing is good but there is not substitute for express fast bowling if you have bowler atleast one who can bowl consistently 150+ he going to win you matches

So, why you so obsessed with speed when morons like Yadav have speed but are crap bowlers?

None of the reasons being discussed here justify young pacers having difficulty touching 130 k even. There must be something wrong with the run-up and action being taught in our country. Almost all international level pacers from India have some significant faults in their action and/or run up. Far more than any other country. I find this strange as well as unacceptable.

there is an increasing amount of green pitches in ranji now... any medium pacer can run thur line ups... there is no need for speed
Such bowlers get figured out at international level.
