govinda Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 we should hire macgrath or shane bond as our bowling coach
Lannister Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 James pattinson is only 24 years old and he has already made a name for himself even though missing a year or 2 due to an injury. Contrary that to our bowlers and particularly Ishanth....!
Yantra Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 Looking at the domestic team bowlers now you get a false feeling that we Indian are not built to bowl fast that is to some extent is true but there are always few in our community who are well build, tall and good athletes its just that they are not discovered, encouraged and trained, you have too many players coming from well to do family who are not used heavy work outs, mentally also not that strong, true gems are hidden in the interior parts of India who are not couch potato or not glued to the online games. if I talk about area close to where I come from we have a people from south Gujarat coastal are who are mainly fisherman community but they are well build strong legs since the walk a lot on the beaches and used to do heavy work, In my collage days there were two boys in my team and boy they were quick, I still remember ball fly past above the keeper head many times when they do bouncers many batsman used to say that when the ball heat the bat their hands vibrates cause the force of the ball heating to bat was such. I am sure there are many in our country like these guys in different part of India, frustrating part is that we just don't seems to find any for long time and that is say last 50-60 years as RKT said we need to have 10-15 of them to choose from not just 2-3.

Cricket is not an obscure sports. You cannot assume some Dale Steyn, Mitchell Johnson is waiting for someone to knock his door in remote parts of Gujarat. Also converting a non cricketer into a cricket because of physical aspects is far fetched idea in our country. Also if we start finding bowlers your way by the time they get ready they will be 30. FIrst run up, pace, conditioning, line and length, skills, stock delivery.. you cannot add one by one to someone who is never interested in playing cricket in the first place. If you want to identify pace bowlers you just have to conduct pace bowling camp where at various parts of India and invite bowlers to bowl. Even that is not a workable solution. But that is as far as we can get. As i said pace bowlers are largely self modelled. Nobody can force you to become an express pace bowler. Just not gonna happen.
Yantra Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 @VVS Identifiying fast bowlers from running short camp is one option but not the one where you have continuing success, what we need identifying talent at high school, college and University levels, there has to be gradual progress to next levels however in most cases aspiring bowlers don't know what to do after doing good at college or University levels, other things is that most who come from poor family once they grow up they have to carry burden of earning for the family, that's why I ask in the my begging comment what happened to the zonal academy where these bowlers could be picked up and trained at BCCI's expense and possible give them monthly stipend so that they can survive its basically setting up good sporting/cricketing culture in the country, I was hoping that IPL will do some thing like this but too bad they just rely on the Ranji players who are already playing for BCCI rather then each IPL team unearth few of their own players each season.
vvvslaxman Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 The problem is mainly diet. Our fast bowlers are weak - they are the thin lanky types with a little belly hanging. Very little upper body strength. Look at fast bowlers from other countries, and you pretty much know one when you see one. I don't think sports nutrition and weight training is emphasized enough while growing up in India. You can only get so far with nan and butter paneer or chapathi and korma or rasam and sambar rice. Actually quick arm action can also help you achieve speed. Nehra has quick arm action. Also Sir Aggy had this whippy action that enabled him to hit the bat lot harder than it looks. But to bowl express pace you need to be strong, athletic, flexible as well. Anything that is dictated by raw physical factors is not really our cup of tea. You could see in other sports as well.
Crookbond Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Poor analysis even by Gavaskar. Pattinson when runs in and tries to bowl quick, runs in quick too. Most bowlers do that. Name any Styen, Johnson, Morkel. Their runup quickens up whn they are bowling quick. Even Zak was like that. Shami's issue has noting to do with having a long runup. It is not even long. Shami does not run in quick at all. Shami runs on his heels that is his problem. He runs too upright and that is why his loading at the crease is poor. While one should run on toes and with a bent back, so, that you are not already in an upright position when you lands on the crease. When Shami is already upright when he runs in, he has no scope for a proper loading which makes his left arm fall early and body imbalance. This is like 101 of bowling and what my school coach taught me. I watched hours of footage of McGrath who did it quite well due to his height. Personally for me, that bend ensured that I was able to control the line and length better. In addition, it helped me put more into the ball and I could zip it off from the pitch which I couldn't otherwise.
