Bedi points finger at Harbhajan

LEGENDARY Indian spinner Bishen Bedi has branded countryman Harbhajan Singh a chucker and blasted the International Cricket Council for ignoring what he believes is a greater blight on cricket than the match-fixing scandal. Bedi previously has been so outspoken about Muthiah Muralidaran's action that the Sri Lankan has threatened a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. But now Bedi has included Harbhajan Singh on his hit-list. "He (Harbhajan) is not any different," Bedi told The Sunday Age yesterday. "The ICC is turning a blind eye to both of them. They are blind to this monstrous problem and it is unfair and undesirable. "It is not something to be ignored. A lot of people have questioned Harbhajan's action and they are right to. He has the same problem as Murali," the former Indian captain and coach said. "This is cricket's greatest tragedy. Match-fixing was disgraceful but no one knew about it, so nothing could be done. Throwing is being allowed to happen in front of 30,000 and 40,000 people," said Bedi, who took 266 wickets in 67 Tests. "Chucking is a bigger disgrace than match-fixing because it is done out in the open. It is the scourge of cricket and must be stopped. "Harbhajan is also surviving on the 15-degree allowance. They're having a ball, these bowlers. "And young bowlers on the subcontinent are coming through and they are copying the actions of Harbhajan and Muralidaran. These boys will be Test cricketers one day and the ICC is going to have a hell of a problem." Harbhajan will arrive in Australia this month as the spearhead of Indians' slow bowling attack that includes skipper Anil Kumble and Murali Kartik. He's been spared much of the scathing criticism directed at Muralidaran partly because he's less successful, but 241 wickets from 58 Tests is still a formidable record. His action isn't as blatant as Muralidaran's but it would struggle to be legal without the 15-degree law. Muralidaran, Pakistan strike bowler Shoaib Akhtar and Harbhajan all have come under scrutiny since the 15-degree threshold was introduced in 2005. Until then, spinners were permitted to straighten their arms by only five degrees, medium pacers 7.5 degrees and fast bowlers 10 degrees. Australian speedster Brett Lee has aroused fleeting suspicions of throwing in the past but Bedi said Lee is in the clear. He is more concerned with Stuart MacGill's fitness and urged the Test veteran to avoid retirement. "I have a lot of time for Stuart MacGill," Bedi said. "It will be a great shame if he does not play this series."

Only Indian media would give a platform to an idiot like Bedi. Do you see Aussie media giving platform to people to call Lee or Watson a chucker? Or Warne a dope cheat? Or Waugh annd Warne as matchfixer? No only asian media can abuse their players like this and especially Indian media

dont blame the media... thats an age old trick. if you cannot confront bedi in a discussion dont target those who give him a podium to speak from. do you see me attacking the moderators here for giving an intolerant and insufferable git like Dada_rocks an avenue for voicing his vituperative nonsense? judge the person on the merit of his argument or lack thereof; dont judge those who simply publish his/her argument.

Humpty Dumpty is right about Murali. I hope he's right about Bhajji too. Thats just about the only way we can save our team from this retard. Expect Bhajji to ride on his Kolkatta wickets for another mediocre year, until we play that next game at home in a dust bowl. A seriously overrated bowler. One that is keeping an emerging pacer out of the team. Out of all chuckers in operation today, the most dangerous of them all is Akhtar. He must be the first to be tested again.

But it's surprising he chooses not to comment on Shoaib.
Akhtar and Murali are cricket's biggest chuckers: Bedi Saturday January 7 2006 00:00 IST AE0.gif pageid=1HYDERABAD: Even as the Rahul Dravid-led Indian cricket team landed in Lahore on Thursday, former Indian Test captain Dilip Vengsarkar gave an interesting statement that would invite debate. Vengsarkar said Shoaib (Akhtar) would be difficult only if he bent his arm. Vengsarkar was referring to Shoaib’s suspect action. It was more of putting psychological pressure on Shoaib even as the Pakistani cricketers have warned that the fiery speedster is in prime form. He was the destroyer-in-chief during the home series against England. But Bishen Bedi is convinced that Shoaib and Sri Lanka off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan are the biggest chuckers in the game. “I still feel the action of both the bowlers (Shoaib and Murali) is suspect. In fact, Shoaib is the biggest chucker but unfortunately both of them have been cleared by the ICC,†says the former Indian captain. Bedi went on to say that apart from Shoaib, Pakistan have two more bowlers - Shabbir Ahmed (pace) and Shoaib Mallik (off-spinner) - who have suspect actions. The former left-arm spinner said younger cricketers have started imitating them. “Their (Shoaib and Murali) action is a bad influence on the young bowlers. Watching these bowlers in action on television, the younger cricketers try to model them. It is really sad. I would partly blame Lanka for encouraging Murali. The other day I watched Botha (Johan) of South Africa. The South African off-spinner also doesn’t have a clean action. It is all rubbish,†concluded Bedi. Balwinder Singh Sandhu, the 1983 World Cup hero and now coach of the Baroda team, agreed that Shoaibs and Muralis are bad influence on the young cricketers. “In the past we had some classical bowlers like Bishen, Pras (Prasanna) or pace bowlers Lillee, Holding, Akram and others who had lovely actions. They were role models for many young cricketers. Now, it is sad to watch young cricketers take Shoaibs or Muralis as the role models,†he said. Sandhu feels the 15 degree or 12 degree rule by the ICC has allowed things to drift. “That is the way it is going. Bowlers, with suspect action, are able to take advantage of it.†The former Indian medium pacer agreed that any bowler with bent action will have more advantage. “They can generate more pace or spin. There is no doubt about it. For me as a cricketer, I would have no sympathy for bent-arm action bowlers.†However, Intikhab Alam, former Pakistan coach and now coach of Punjab Ranji team, said since ICC had already cleared Shoaib’s action there is no room for any doubt about Shoaib’s action. “We should not have any room for suspicion,†he said in Visakhapatnam. According to former Test off-spinner Arshad Ayub, since the ICC has given permission the 15 degree rule, the bowlers are within the parameters. “It is legal bending to the extent of 15 degrees. They have been given the licence to bowl and the bowlers are taking advantage of it. It is of course a funny situation,†he said. Shoaib Akhtar continues to chase controversy. The mind game has begun. Incidentally, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has meanwhile strongly objected to the posting of Daryl Hair of Australia as one of the elite umpires for the series. Hair has been out to catch bowlers with suspect action. Ask Muralitharan. http://www.newindpress.com/Newsitems.asp?ID=IES20060106080836&Title=Sports&Topic=0

I'd play Pathan over Bhajji on a non dust bowl any day. Infact Pathan should have played ahead of Bhajji at Kotla. Even on a dust bowl, Bhajji is bowling with absolutely no common sense. Look at the way Kumble is working on the batsman & how Bhajji squanders opportunities against Sami. Absolute rubbish bowler

Bedi: Bhajji too chucks

Melbourne: After criticising Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralidharan as a ‘chucker’, former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi has pulled up Harbhajan Singh, saying “he is no differentâ€. Bedi also lashed out at the ICC for “turning a blind eye to this (chucking) problemâ€. “He (Harbhajan) is no different. The ICC is turning a blind eye to both of them.
