Yeah people in India should not be *****ing about work days. Working in the states' date=' we dont get many holidays or paid leaves[/quote'] This is why i look at the TCS layoff very differently from how my Indian friends looked at it.

Go to Germany or other Europe countries you will get atleast a month holiday. 2. You get 10 times more salary by working half the hours compared to us,be happy.

You do know the India salary situation is mainly because of low cost of living, very high % of unemployed and competition for jobs?

Competition for job & unemployment is is there in foreign countries as well. Any way this is different debate, just saying few additional holidays [actually its only 2 extra in my office..US guys get 10 & we get 12 regular holidays per year] is not big deal. But i have seen US guys taking 2 to 3 weeks off in last weeks of December which is rarely followed here in India.

You do know that public and private sectors are 2 different things? And that when government declares holidays' date=' it is not a mandate or a law and it's writ is limited to public sectors? Even private schools, can decide not to declare holidays and that is not illegal.[/quote'] In case of the NCT of Delhi, government mandates 3 holidays every year even for the private sector. I posted the law here, check it out.

I don't think the Government mandates the private sector to have certain days off. The private sector can decide which days they want to be closed for business. Most Indian companies pick a subset of all the holidays in a year and set those as holidays. Closing business for all public holidays for businesses will lead to disruption of services especially if these companies are supporting other workers in different countries.
Sir' date=' I have worked in the private sector in India as well as the US. The same company that provides 25 days of paid time off (Vacation, personal, sick) in India provided 15 days of time off in the US. That is still very generous because most American companies would only give you 10 days of time off in the first few years of your employment.[/quote'] I think the crux of the matter is that you think government does not have any say in the private sector. It does - check the Shops and Establishment Act, I posted. Of course, each state has its own law.

That is the reason I asked to make a labor law comparison. My gut feeling is that the US labor law will be better in theory and practice than the Indian labor law. Maybe, if I have some time next week - I will do it myself. A lot of people are just posting their anecdotal experiences which really doesn't say much.

I have taken 2-3 weeks off without any problems And no, competition in third world countries with over population and poverty will be much larger than in first world countries. There are people who will refuse to work below a certain wage, which is not true in India Also, interesting fact, the skilled workers in the US, the plumbers, electricians, etc are paid much more than office workers per hour, something which is opposite in India

We know that he was denied at least one such holiday - 26 January. Besides, if we don't know - why are we giving lectures on "professionalism" to the OP's friend? We should ask for more information, right? Reminds me of the Reliance WT20 2007 "advice" ad.

A professional set up, particularly off shoring cannot afford such holidays, it defeats the whole point of off shoring a work It is very, very, very clear from the OP that the friend DID NOT give advance notice. And yes, that is extremely unprofessional and any organization, including Indian ones, will take action. There might be debates on Indian laws and holidays, however, there is no doubt that the behavior itself was unprofessional
