Yeah, but there is no rule that says that past great should have played ODIs to be in the squad. Tendulkar, Lara, etc. did not play T20, but we know they have done superbly in them esp. if they played that format at their peak And you will probably be the first person to have Sir Gary Sobers in the squad but not in the playing 11 .... and ofc likes of Jayasuriya, Kallis, etc. ahead of the person many consider the greatest cricketer! :P

I kept things simple and went with folks who played odis else this exercise would delve into "what about Hobbs" or "why not Spofforth". If I'd to pick Sobers I would do so in place of Kallis but Kallis gets the nod coz of his stellar record over the years. Maybe if he fails a couple of times Sobers would get his spot.

I have gone with all retired players (Sanga retired recently from ODIs at least iirc so makes it) .... Sobers makes it by virtue of playing one ODI. He is the key player for me and will also captain the side U--JmzsdUKI If the squad is of 16, I will probably include Jonty for his fielding, where he saved tons of runs. His ability to get RO almost made him like a 6th bowler

Richards should come at No. 3. May be we can have an attacking all rounder (like Faulkner, Maxwell, Symonds, Klusener, Flintoff) in place of either Kallis or Hussey.

Jonty was not the best in running people out it was ponting.

I would have Viv at No. 3, AB at 5. Someone like Klusener, Flintoff, Symonds, or Maxwell in place of Kallis, as he is most useful at No. 3/4. Down the order, we need people who use the long handle well, as well as can do partnerships and bail out the team if there is a batting collapse.

Good pick. I would perhaps have a quick like Holding or Donald in the playing 11 & replace Kapil with a Maxwell, Symonds or Klusener.

However, we can assume based on his performances in tests (an ATG test batsmen) and potential that he would have been amongst the greats in ODIs. So if you have him in the squad, he should be in the playing 11 as he would be in the same league as Richards and Tendulkar, and probably the best batsman in the squad[/quote']

I am still wondering why people select Warne in an ATG ODI XI. Murali and Saqlain have obviously better records, Kumble and Qadir comparable ones. Warne never enjoys his dominace in Tests in ODIs. Other perplexing thing is why people do not rate McGrath in top 3 ODI pacemen.

Tendulkar Gilchrist Ponting Richards ABDV / Yuvraj Dhoni Kapil / Imran Wasim Warne Lee McGrath / Garner It is important to have good alrounders at 6 to 8. Lee is perhaps the best express bowler in ODIs. You need atleast one in the lineup. Both Lee and Warne would make the batting order longer. I would include Yuvraj if the pitch is spin friendly. Would give me an extra spinner. Plus, Yuvraj is one of the best six hitters and tough condition lower order ODI batters I have seen. Plus, he would be the only left hander in the middle order. Kapil was a better strokemaker than Imran. Imran was a bit quicker. Kapil was the better conventional swing bowler, Imran better at reverse swing. Choice among the 2 would depend on playing conditions. We have an express pacer in Lee; steep bounce and accuracy in McGrath and Garner; pace in Lee, Wasim, Imran; left arm pacer in Wasim; swing in Kapil, Wasim,Lee; reverse swing in Wasim, Imran ; all these pacer could seam the ball; a leg spinner in Warne; off spinner in Richards; left arm orthodox in Yuvi; ....so a lot of variety for different conditions and variation. I have tried to keep most players from World Cup winning teams....who know how to perform on the big stage and in pressure conditions.
