In a perfect world, shouldn't numbers favour us?

Might have discussed before but I would like to know your views 1) We have a population of 1.2 Billion. More than 50% is male. Lets not discuss the age factor here, lets just logically assume that in comparison to other cricketing nations our population is about 4-5times in size. 2) BCCI is the richest cricketing board 3) India cricketers are richest 4) There is a lot of money in cricket in India 5) Nearly every school that plays sports has cricket program. so why can't we produce an unbeatable team? Odds really favour us.

If BCCI were as professional as CA we would be right there with Aus, but unfortunately Indian cricket is run by folks like Srinivasans, Pawars etc. who don't even know the difference between formats or home & away. For them winning a T20 at home would be the same as winning a Test away, and all they care about is money. Didn't someone from top brass of BCCI make a statement "look even England struggle when they play away and we have taken revenge for Eng series" when India won a odi series against Eng at home after going 0-4 in Tests there? That should say it all as I highly doubt CA would act the same way.

True the numbers should support us. However, I don't know how effective cricket training programs in India are, and how good the coaching is at professional level. It appears as if most of the innovation in cricket happens outside of Ind which is usually late in implementing best practices or learning. Also there is a huge baggage of hanging on to various cliche: WGVvtdn9h6M For e.g. - take a look at the above video and you can feel that the bowler is thinking about how to pick wkts. In Ind, bowlers are conditioned to cut down on pace and bowl for economy, which will eventually put pressure on the batsmen leading to a wkt .... Ideally, bowlers should be thinking about how to get the batsmen out. How do I get the ball to pitch on leg and knock the off-stump? In Ind, if a bowler tries to do that and the ball goes for a 4, he would be out of the next game. As a result of how Ind thinks about its game, its cricket is closer to how Eng plays soccer than how Brazil plays the game .... Until we don't start playing cricket like how Brazil plays soccer, we will continue to produce good to very good teams, but never a team of ATG caliber. PS See what Akram tries to do below: zju0FMFiFFM In Ind, if a bowler tried to do that but if the bowl did not reverse and went for a 4, people would think it is bad bowling. So our bowlers may not even attempt to do something like that .... Additionally, most often than not our field settings are designed to stop boundaries (or runs), rather than pick up wkts

@@@ Ultimate_Game ^^ yes very good post. But don't you think IPL should have changed this if that was the real problem? Earlier if a player is held back because of politics or whatever then he couldn't have raised his voice or showcased his talent. But with IPL people can see potential and they can be given a chance. Yusuf Phatan, Saurav Tiwari, etc all got a chance to play for India and no one performed. At the end of they day they were all hacks with 15mins of fame. So the problem lies with talent?

So the problem lies with talent?[/quote'] A 1.5 month long annual tourney (IPL) cannot replace the role of cricket's administrative body (BCCI), especially when IPL itself is run under the auspices of BCCI and has lots of conflicts of interest. An IPL franchise would only think short term and wouldn't care about grooming players long term as every 3 years there's an auction and they may not keep the players they groomed. Franchises only care about one season a time and couldn't care less what happens to a player or how a player is managed rest 10.5 months of the year. BCCI on the other hand exist solely to have the best interests of Indian cricket at heart but that's not really happening as BCCI under Srinivasan cares more about money and IPL. If this weren't the case we would have seen senior players bein kicked out after 0-8, Fletcher being booted out long time back and DRS mandatory for India matches especially given the decisions we get when we tour Eng & Aus.

Feel sorry for India. You guys should be bossing cricket to be honest. 1.2 billion population yet not a single fast bowler. Lets hope Varun and Shami can continue to be good. I hope so. I like Asian teams doing well.

Populations are fractal in nature in my opinion. You drill down and take smaller and smaller samples and you'd still find some brilliant, most average, and some pathetic sets in each subset. As long as the base size is still above a certain threshold, ideally, all cricketing nations will continue to throw up 11-15 players who are good enough to challenge anyone in the world. To put it very simply with an analogy. Whether you cultivate over hectares or on the backside of your house, an orange will remain an orange. And you can find 11 oranges of good taste in your small backyard orange tree, just as good as any 11 plucked from hectares of cultivated farmland. Actually, sometimes the 11 plucked from the hectares of farmland could end up being inferior if plucked from the wrong sample. Given the small size of your backyard, you are also in additional position to care for these and nurture them more effectively as well.

Go to espncricinfo.com and search for max wickets in this WC . The third in the list, goes by the name Umesh Yadav. Bowls 150 kmph. Better than Wahab Riaz.

Like I said. Lets hope Yadav and Shami can consistently be good. History suggests they won't as they are Indian - and most likely will fade away. I want them to do well, but just not against Pakistan :)

You say as if Pakistan had all time great fast bowlers at all times in their history. Well, not really. Only Wasim Akram can be regarded as a true all time great, and to some good degree Waqar as well. Apart from them, who? Shoiab sizzled for a small time then became a parody of himself. Since the retirement of the two Ws, which Pakistani fast bowler has gone onto being regarded as a truly great? So please don't talk to us about your great "history".

I think it is pretty embarrassing. With a population of more than 1.2 Billion and all cricket crazy, you would think no one would be able to beat India. If I'm to be fully honest here, and it is my personal experience, that Indian males (generally) aren't as athletic as the Pakistanis and the Pakistanis aren't as athletic as other races. The average Indian I see here (in the UK) is more worried about their next maths exam than anything else... India produces good batsmen because it doesn't require much athleticism in my opinion. P.S: I'm not being biased here because I believe even Pakistan with it's population should produce a lot more batsmen than it recently has.

England should winning half of the football world cups then
I think that too. England should really be dominating football but England has a population of 70 million whereas India has a population of 1200 million. That's 17x more and therefore statistically India should be able to produce 17 teams as good as England's in cricket...and the fact that very few people in England play cricket in comparison to India should make that number even bigger.

Indian population is massive and so are the number of NRIs so to base an opinion by observing few indians is grossly unfair.india do have a healthy percentage of male athletes or at least physically fit sportsmen which is good by world standards its just that the percentage will come out to be a very small fraction because of our large population and hence the wrong perception
