Sample set and longevity matters but its not everything. This reminds me of Afridi hype just bcos he has 8000 ODI runs and 400 wickets. Of course, not equating Kumble with Afridi. Kumble was really good but Wasim, Waqar, Imran, Murali were easily superior to him. ATGs. Neutrals still talk about them a lot while Kumble is hardly in the picture. I feel Kumble is under appreciated but not let's do a Dravid on him. That is overcompensate.

Qadir perhaps is a better ODI bowler than Kumble, but the longevity and ability to bowl at death means I would prefer Kumble over Qadir in ODIs. Imran is a better bowler tha Kpail in any format, there cannot be much doubt about it.

Muloghonto Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 IMO, Murali could've been better. The one x-factor that Shane Warne always had was that he was a very aggressive and thinking bowler. He knew when he couldn't just 'jam through' the batsmen with sheer vicious spin, accuracy and flight and lured them to their demise. Murali on the other hand, was a superior spinner (due to his unfair but legal action, but whatever)- he did get almost as much sideways spin, flighted the ball a little less but the doosra was a killer and came with even more accuracy (not surprising as offies tend to be more accurate than leggies). But if you bested Murali, he tended to give up and just wait and hope you made a mistake. Hardly ever lured batsmen or played mind games with them (not sledging, but in terms of mixing it up with field placements and bowling lines). Anyhoos, here are the top 5 from Asia: 1. Muralitharan: arguably one of the top 5 greatest spinners ever. The most under-appreciated thing about Murali was his stamina: this is where he was aeons ahed of Warne or even Kumble, as they were not immune to bowling 80 overs a match, every match, back to back, like Murali was, with very little injury issues. 2. Akram: finest left arm bowler- fast or spin and one of the top 5 fast bowlers ever. One of the few bowlers who totally took pitches out of the equation. 3. Waqar: faded badly but at his best, could bowl wonder-balls like nobody else at a searing pace. If there ever was a pacer who was a magic ball specialist, it was Waqar. His stats don't do him much justice but to be fair, he never quite peaked as a bowler- came in as a raw incredible magic ball bowler at top speed but not crafty enough to blow through seasoned batting lineups on his own and when he became crafty, had lost a lot of his pace and magic ball capability. 4. Imran Khan: his tampering did give him a statistical leg-up but from 78 to 86, he was a genuine fast bowler who could blow through lineups on fast pitches. 5. Chandrasekhar/Kumble: virtually identical bowlers, bowling fast-ish leg spin, with extreme amounts of minute variations. These guys have stats that do not do them justice, as they lacked the one thing every good spinner needs to excel in all conditions: incisive fast bowlers, so that they can come in more at 40/2 instead of 60/0 or 10/1 with a new ball. I've seen a lot of Kumble and one thing that is undeniable about Kumble, is that he was the deadliest bowler on pitches that favored him: give him a cracked, dusty surface with medium bounce and skid and he used those conditions better than any bowler used their ideal conditions. That cannot be overlooked IMO.
