Gollum Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 One thing I have noticed is the popularity of Shahid Afridi and Pakistan cricket team(Shoaib Akhtar to a lesser extent) among Indian Muslims. Among all my Muslim friends except one or two their favourite player is Afridi. May be because most of my Muslim friends are from Hyderabad and Burdwan, 2 places where I spent most of my life. And almost all of them have Pakistan as their favourite team. In social media they follow/like everything to do with Pakistan cricket and don't really follow much about Indian cricket. they do like a few IPL teams but not our national team. All these guys are decent and we get along well face to face, most of them I know since my school days, won't call them sinister or narrow minded. So I looked into it a bit deeper and their friends too have Pakistan as their favourite team and Afridi as their favourite player, with no Indian player(including Sachin,Dhoni,Yuvraj or for that matter even Zaheer Khan or Pathan) among their liked/followed ones. What is about these Pakistani cricketers that catches the attention amongst our fellow countrymen?. I mean Afridi is such a mediocre cricketer, if they liked Wasim Akram,Waqar,Inzi etc it would make some sense. Indian players since 2000 have more flair, ability and style than parosi counterparts. In 2011 WC semis, I had 1st hand experience of their negative attitude. The match was being shown in our University auditorium in Bangalore(a highly reputed Uni, so all students are well educated, from good background) and all Kashmiri students, those who did undergrad from Aligarh University, some Hyderabadis did not even stand up for the Indian national anthem and were cheering for every Indian wicket, they left the audi after Afridi got out sensing defeat. The people who were most vocal and got into scuffle with these guys were some of the patriotic Muslims(very few in number) cheering for India but was still bad to see 15-20 guys cheering against us the whole match. Have you guys ever had such experience amongst your friends/college colleagues/work colleagues/ city folk? And what could be the reason behind this negative mindset against probably the most secular institution in India, our cricket team which never discriminates w.r.t religion during selection of the squad? Why do they support Pakistan team but don't bother about Bangladesh cricket team which is also almost 95-100% Muslim? What % of our minority cricket following population would be India supporters viz a viz Pak supporters? Let us not use this thread to bash a certain community but to understand/get to the bottom of the psychology of such people. May be such people are in isolated pockets like Hyderabad, Bengal, Kashmir, Aligarh, Bhopal etc and do not represent the pulse in the rest of the country.
BlueBee Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 THey watch it for entertainment which Afridi provides. :hysterical:

I have never seen an Indian Muslim cheer for pak team aside from those Kashmiri students on FB.
BeautifulGame Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 I grew up in a Muslim neighborhood town and never seen anyone supporting Pakistan not even in neutral matches . Lot of them were massive Akram fans though .

Gollum Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 No..common people...we have a place called Bhatkal near Mangalore, called as mini Pakistan. Any way this is long time ago,may be things should have changed by now. Bhatkal has turned for the worse now, more like old Hyderabad these days.

bulbul Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Bhatkal has turned for the worse now' date=' more like old Hyderabad these days.[/quote'] Talking about other parts of Managlore , hope is still there, Bhatkal will never going to change.
panther Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Most of them probably think of themselves as descendants of Afghans hence the love for afridi, whether they are or not is another matter, just check this page on wiki the amount of independent Afghan rulers in India. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pashtun_empires_and_dynasties

Gollum Posted April 9, 2015 Author Posted April 9, 2015 Good to see that such things haven't spread everywhere, better confined to ghettos.

Dravidian type features, not husky, well built, fair skinned, paawerhouse Aryan Afghans. :giggle:

randomGuy Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Actually I love the Afghan cricket team too. Support them over every other team except India. When India has a few players I don't like, I may support Afghan over India too.
Guldozer Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Not all afghans are fair skin' date=' a lot are brown to dark brown. Though you can get anomalies like Shahrukh Khan.

The pashtuns of the hills (swat, malakand, dir, waziristan, kunar, paktia,) etc are mostly fair the ones from the flat lands like peshawar, bannu etc are mostly tanned.
