But the phrase ‘Nervous Nineties’ does not exist in teammate and friend Sourav Ganguly’s vocabulary. He simply loves to bat in the nineties. Otherwise, how do you describe his current dream run. The ongoing third Test here is his 99th game; he entered the nineties exactly a year ago with his comeback to the Indian side last December against South Africa. And in the last year, his batting has been on a different level. He marked the occasion yesterday by completing 1000 runs, 1034 to be precise, at an average of 57.4 Tests in his last 11 Tests. His inspiration now is to get to his 100th Test in style. He could not have served a better appetizer for the landmark game in Melbourne (on December 26), than his glorious 239 against Pakistan at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on the second day. In partnership with Yuvraj, Ganguly helped seize the initiative back for his team. Yesterday he used his experience to stay put long enough to ensure that his team reached a position from where it cannot lose. It is also safe to say that the left-hander’s epic effort has helped India pocket its first home series against Pakistan in 28 years. With comeback-man Irfan Pathan also helping himself to his maiden hundred, the home team batted Pakistan out of the game with a total of 626 for nine decl. In reply, the visitors are 86 for one. The Bengal Tiger batted like a true champion while getting to his maiden double hundred. There have been some outstanding performances in this series, but it will be remembered as Ganguly’s series. He played a vital role in India’s win in the first Test with a timely 48 in the second innings apart from providing useful breakthroughs in both the innings. He followed it up with 104 and 46 in the second Test before putting a thick cherry on the cake with his classic here. And one man who has been there and done it is impressed. “It was a special effort from Ganguly. He is a favourite for the man of the series,” former Pakistan skipper Aamir Sohail told MiD DAY yesterday. What impressed Sohail most was the maturity of Ganguly’s effort. “In the absence of Sachin Tendulkar, he took the onus and all the pressure on himself. He did not allow the pressure to get to youngsters like Yuvraj, Karthik and Pathan.” “He batted with the team’s goal in mind and showed a lot of patience to stay at the wicket till the team’s target total was achieved,” observed Sohail. At the start of his innings here, the pressure was on India but Ganguly kept a positive body language. It was a near flawless innings from the former captain. The remarkable feature being the patience he showed after reaching his hundred. They didn't boo RD alone. The entire team was booed. The worst thing was they cheered the opposition. I don't think any other place in India would have cheered the opposition and wanted to win over the home team, just because their favorite player is not in the team. It's hardly not surprising given then the pinkos cheer China and supported China in the 1961 war against India.

The record for India against Pakistan is probably Sehwag's 544 in 2004/5 (Gavaskar has never made as many and I can't think of anyone else who could have done that).

I would think it would be Sanjay Manjrekar with 569 in 4 tests @94.83. That was in Pakistan of course.

Who would have imagined we would be embarking on our next Australian tour with Ganguly as our leading batsman when he called for the third umpire to confirm he was bowled off Afridi at Bangalore in 2005? He deserves every bit of the rare achievement of 500 runs in a 3 test series.
