In that ODI where SA chased down 434, Gibbs smashed the Aussies all over the park and basically won the game single-handedly.

He was a quota candidate, to begin with. Without Dalmiya he would have been no one. All he did well as a captain was to ruin the careers of players like VVS Laxman, by batting above them in the line up. Pathetic.

According to the handbook of lazy cricketing cliches, talent = ability to play big shots and determination = defense. Neither Gibbs nor Yuvraj had the talent to see off good spells of bowling regardless of how hard they tried.

Marut Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Neither Ganguly nor Yuvi underperformed in tests. Ganguly was better than Yuvi, but both of them were not as good in defense as they were in attack. They were a notch or two below our best test batsmen like Tendu, Dravid and Laxman. Sehwag made up for his inferior defense with aggressive scoring so he did not over perform in tests.

Marut Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Sachin (Sachin played much better against better bowlers and harsher conditions of the 90s compared to relatively inferior bowlers and batsman friendly condition after 90s - if this is not under performance then what else is?) Around 1998, I thought Sachin would finish with a career average of 60+ at a S/R of 60+ if he played till 2010. I thought he would play a lot of impactful knocks (comparable to Kolk 2001) but those knocks were rarely seen from his blade. Sachin rarely played well in a pressure situation like battling out 100+ overs in a fourth innings cause. Considerable underachievement for some one with his talent. Sachin the best prodigy the world has ever seen at the age of 16 did not fully achieve his potential inspite of his tremendous accomplishments.

But I guess Ganguly had solid numbers after he made his comeback in 2005 or so. His last 3 years were as good as his first 4 years.
