So, will it work the other way around too ? Irfan is playing for a spot in the side, gets a favorable decision and goes to do well and seal his place ? Will he then, come out and say - " I performed well , because the umpire helped me" ? Of course he wont, and niether will any sane player complain about bad umpiring decisions affecting their career.
And if Pathan plays the Boxing day Test on the back of favorable umpiring decisions, that won't be rigth either. He is supposed to play on merit, so is Ishant.
Yes, who said umpiring decisions dont change a cricket match ? They are meant to.
If umpires are meant to alter the course of cricket matches and not the players why don't umpires make conscious decisions to turn every match into a nail biter? That would certainly make cricket more exciting and bring in more money than giving random wrong decisions. I have asked you this before - say your GPA gets screwed by an incompetent TA/Professor how will you feel about it? They are humans and can make mistakes but because of higher accountability in top schools they would face career threatening consequences for such mistakes. That's professionalism.

Hypocrisy. If it were your job on the line, you'd be yelling blue murder. It's not just the decisions that Shwetabh has picked up on, and BTW, he is as fair as they come, but several others not given, highlighted in Dileep's article on Cricinfo- all legitimate dismissals, negated by the umpires. There was one in the Pakistani innings as well- Kartick was stone dead, not given, but India have really copped it hard today. Might cost them the series. One of the best ever from Shwetabh. Hats off for its timely nature and relevance.
Well, the only thing i can say for that is, I openly call anyone who feels that umpiring decisions can adversely affect the career of players to get me one, just one quote by ANY player, former or current, where he has come out and said poor umpiring cost him dearly. Lets see how many of you guys can come up with what i have asked for.

No my point is, the people who cry foul everytime an umpire gives a wrong decision saying - " this is not level playing field, we must make it even for both the sides". i say that is insane logic. Cricket, as a game itself, is not about level playing field. There are so many vagaries that make the game what it is, and human umpiring errors is one of 'em.
Nope, if you let umpiring be one of these factors, then you deserve to be on the receiving end of the stick most of the time. It's really stupid btw to think like that given the fact that we have good enough technology to root out most wrong decisions. And it's stupid because, by your thinking we should go back to letting the umps decide run outs as well, part of the game and charm I suppose.

No, there is a fundemental difference between the two scenarios. The TA/professor is not making split second decisions, therefore there would NO justification for him to make flagrant errors in his grading. Umpiring is not like that. And its not just in cricket, poor line calls have affected so many sports like football, rugby, basketball. And with regards to umpire making conscious decisions to make the match closer, that would tantamount to match-fixing. There is a difference between unknowingly doing something and knowing what you do and still doing it.

So, why not try to fix the others too ? Lets play indoors where there is no dew. Lets play with a synthetic surface like tennis, where the surface never wears. Lets play with a ball that never alters in condition. we can do that right ? But why the hell dont you guys complain about them ? you dont because you understand its a part of the game, makes it what it is. Umpiring is also like that, understand that.
becuase those things r good for the game..giving a person out on 192, after he fights fights fights..aint good, is it?

Just one question, do you think it'll make the game richer if we go back a decade+ and let the on field umps make run out decision? Explain please whatever your answer is.

didnt get to see todays play, will watch the highlights on tv in about 30 mins but from what you say, that is absolutely pathetic this guy tauffel is constantly voted the best umpire in the world, but i remember him giving a few poor decisions against india over the last few months

you did.. or thats what me and others think you said. And no umpires arent allowed to change the course of a game thru wrong decisions when there is a easy way to figure out the correct decision.
I NEVER said umpiring decisions dont alter a game. They definitely do have an impact, which they are meant to.
it absolutely is just about the 22 ..... dont let any old fuddy duddies brain wash you that its about 22+2 ...
Been there done that Boss. we spent an entire weekend on this before. Dont want to keep repeating the same.

See, before you decide to make an argument, why dont you check to see whether what you say makes sense or not ? Can an umpire judge on an LBW ? Yes he can. Can an umpire judge on a wide ? Yes he can ? Can an umpire judge on a high-speed run-out ? Ofcourse he cant, thats why we have T.V replays See the difference ?
I recall Andrew Strauss complaining about few bad Umpiring decisions couple of months ago after he was droped from the SL tour.
Abs ! like he was in rip-roaring form before !

Coz it doesnt make sense, simply coz a human can never adjudicate on such a high-speed event and give decisions that often involve just a few millimeters sometimes.

Oh really ? Please go back 2 weeks. Simon Taufel and Billy Doctrove, first test Delhi. They were a record number of 19+ lbw appeals in the first 2 days alone. They got 18 of them right.

And they've got loads of them wrong yesterday. So what's the point? Besides we have the technology that can help, so what exactly is the issue for not using it. BTW: even one wrong decision in the right time can change the match, so why take that chance when you don't have to.

When you claimed that umpires cant get lbw decisions right and when i showed that they can, you have gone back to your traditional " we have tech, lets use it". sigh....

I'm not changing anything, it doesn't matter if they get it right in one match, even a bad day like yesterday proves that they are NOT reliable, get that simple idea first. And it's not like they have a bad day in a year, it's more frequent than any sane person would allow unless it's benefiting him/her.

Its not meant to get EVERY decision right EVERY time. Then, cricket wont be the sport that we like so much today.
