Sachin=GOD Posted June 26, 2015 Posted June 26, 2015 40 years ago emergency was declared on June 25 1975. I just finished reading 'The Emergency' by Coomi Kapoor. I knew that emergency was a very dark period but I really didn't have an idea of the extent of corruption, manipulation, power grab by Sanjay Gandhi & his cronies, media being silenced so effectively, revenge on opponents, brutality against people and the fear instilled in the minds of anyone remotely connected with the those opposing emergency. Would strongly recommend it to everyone - read it and then you will realize why Congress is THE MOST CORRUPT PARTY IN INDIA. The biggest shock for me was the fact that people voted for Indira Gandhi again in 1980 and gave her 350 seats. Leaders of the Janata Party had a golden opportunity to send the entire top leadership of Cong (and many, many civil servants like Jagmohan, Navin Chawla etc who were even more brutal than Sanjay Gandhi and in the end were given many important posts by Cong in 1980, 90s and even as recent as 2009 for Chawla who became Chief Election Commissioner) in jail for a long, long time and to change Indian politics forever. Sadly, they were so concerned with becoming PM (Morarji, Charan Singh, Jagjivan Ram and even Chandrasekhar all though they should be PM) and on taking revenge on Cong that the Govt itself couldn't last because of huge ego clashes while the cases filed against Cong leaders were done in extreme haste (particularly by Charan Singh who was Home Minister in Morarji Govt) so they couldn't really stand. BTW nobody from the Nehru dynasty (Indira/Sanjay/Rajeev/Sonia/Rahul/Priyanka/Meneka/Varun) has ever apologized. In fact they've hardly said anything at all on this subject in 40 years. Almost the entire top leadership of Cong since the 1980s (Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kamal Nath, Ambika Soni, Digvijaya Singh, P Chidambaram, AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, Vilasrao Deshmukh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Ashok Gehlot, Anand Sharma, Jagdish Tytler, Pranab Mukherjee, Arjun Singh among others) got their start in politics or support at crucial moments from Sanjay Gandhi - all of them also have nothing to say about it and have only risen higher and higher with support of Indira/Rajeev/Sonia while laying the blame for the emergency on Sanjay. Among the opposition leaders from that time, most of JP's followers like Lalu/Mulayam/Nitish/Sharad Yadav etc have been playing caste politics and have been busy in making money off politics. George Fernandes slowly lost his influence even though he got bigger posts like Defence Ministry in NDA Govt. Ones from BJP (Atalji, LKA, Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Madan Lal Khurana, Sushil Modi etc) have done better when they got a chance to govern at state/central level.
Sachin=GOD Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 Mummy meri car gayi Beta meri sarkar gayi Slogan used when news came out of Congress' massive loss in 1977 elections.
Sachin=GOD Posted June 26, 2015 Author Posted June 26, 2015 Why I call the Emergency a University of Democratisation: just take a look at its major graduates, right up to Narendra Modi. http://m.indiatoday.in/story/emergency-anniversary-shekhar-gupta-narendra-modi-indira-gandhi/1/447131.html
Texan Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Yet, when Indira Gandhi was assassinated less than 10 years after she imposed the Emergency, people ended up giving her party a massive sympathy vote (the largest majority India has ever seen). Just goes to show you how much we do "hero worship" even when the "hero" has acted in such a despicable manner.
BeautifulGame Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 Reading it atm.Have to say even Jaitely's foreword is excellent. Shame JP died too soon ,doubt Indira would have made a comeback otherwise
Khalpat Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 I am not trying to play devils advocate here but to be honest, the side effects of JP Andolan was also not very good for our country. All the Universities and Colleges became political battleground. The student leaders suddenly became puppets of political class, this agitation did lot of harm to our educational institutes IMO.

Raghav_12 Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 i have always believed that Indira, and congress for that matter, received much less stick than she should have. Undoubtedly Emergency is most despicable (followed by Sikh Riots, Gujrat Riots, Babri Demilition, in no partiuclar order) thing to have happened in Indian democracy and we don't read enough of that in media or anywhere. Until I was seriously adult I didn't know why emergency was such a big deal. But I can imagine Indira bhakts of that time would have argued that with election victory of 80, Indira was cleared of Emergency the way bhakts nowadays argue that with electoral victory of 14 Modi is absolved of Gujrat riots.

Indira Gandhi was already a 10 year old PM when she imposed emergency but Narendra Modi was 3 month old CM without any prior administrative experience during the riot. Indira Gandhi's golden temple and Bhindrawale episode after 1980 proves that she was again on the same path and it was matter of time Sanjay Gandhi would have imposed another emergency but Not even a single instance of escalated communal violence in otherwise riot sensitive state of Gujarat for 12 years proved that Modi learned his lessons. There are only two ways of proving any politicians innocence either it is judicial process or through people's mandate or else if we are going to discuss on just the media reports then we know what exactly has happened in the church attack news used to spread misinformation.
mishra Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 Why should kin of Indiraji apologize for emergency. People can moan as much as they want, But no prime minister will ever gonna achieve what Indira ji was able to achieve on national ( Khalistan, Assam, Nagaland,Tripura,Mizo, maoist, Kashmir) and International (UN , USA, Pakistan,Russia) front. I would say we should be gratefull to have a leader like her. Indiraji murdered on duty, cause was decisions taken on national Interest.

Just a little bit of maturity at that time could have changed Indian politics forever. On the matter of student politics - students being introduced to/interested in politics at university level could have been a very good thing but the way it has happened in India (with major political parties controlling the biggest student bodies) is quite pathetic and has an adverse impact.

David Cameron apologized for Jalianwala Bagh massacre after nearly a century. In case of emergency Indira and Sanjay Gandhi were directly responsible - they imposed and brutally enforced it. No Prime Minister took away the basic human rights of India's people or subverted democracy or abused the constitution the way she did. As for her murder - it was Sanjay's friends (Anant Bir Singh etc) who made Bhindranwale join politics as a counter to the Akalis.....and then they couldn't control him as he became too powerful.

All across India, a lot of people actually people cried hearing at the news. A lot of freedom fighters (considered pure Congressee) were still alive and villagers gathered at their places to pay up the condolences. Many gave up hope because India started burning.

Some conspiracy theories claim that Indira ji got Sanjay Gandhi killed for his unruly ways. If anything Sanjay Gandhi's family is part of BJP. Cameroon is NOT descendent/kin of Dyer? Cameroon apoligy came as prime minister (read PM office) of GB. Askin kins to apologize is like asking son to pay for bankruptcy committed by parents.

The incidents which you are mentioning are equally horrific but they do not have the blot of being government sponsored.

If the current generation of Congress party can ask vote on the basis of good deeds done by their parents and grand parents then morally they should apologize for the bad deeds also. Rahul Gandhi missed a huge opportunity during 10 year UPA term by not taking any position or responsibility and creating his own legacy.

Bhagal pur, State complicity Blood bath of Kar Sevaks by Mr Mulayam, State sponsored.
