Sky has offered to pay around £40m a year in broadcasting rights for a Twenty20 tournament with teams billed as cities rather than counties when the new format gets under way in 2017. The England and Wales Cricket Board chairman, Colin Graves, is known to be set on introducing a city-based T20 series and the additional revenue from Sky would allow for each team to pay big wages to lure international stars similar to those in the IPL and Australia’s Big Bash League and enable Sky to market the broadcasting rights globally. While the ECB says no final decision has been made, the Observer understands they are close to final proposals that would see a revamp of the domestic T20 competition based around eight city-based teams. Sky is keen for the tournament to be played in a three- or four-week block at the height of summer, with matches in the evenings so they can be broadcast after the end of any international matches taking place at that time. There is real opposition among the counties to the idea, though Warwickshire have played as Birmingham Bears, and it is understood that some of Sky’s additional money will be offered as a sweetener to accept a cut in the number of Championship matches down to 12 as a way of making room for the competition. The ECB is exploring whether the franchise tournament could run in addition to a Twenty20 competition played by all 18 counties. It is likely that city-based teams would be owned by either the ECB or by the county doing the hosting rather than by private companies, as are the IPL franchises. The success of the Big Bash League and the increased viewing figures that has attracted has prompted both the ECB and Sky to consider the merits of a similar tournament in England. They have recently recruited Mike Fordham, one of the leading figures involved in launching both the IPL and the Caribbean Premier League. Fordham, who is a vice-president at IMG, a global sports and media business, was involved in drawing up IMG’s proposals for how franchise cricket might work in England and which suggested any such tournament could end up being worth over £1bn. Both the ECB and Sky declined to comment.

Over half of cricket fans in ngland are Asians. They want to watch Asian cricket. England needs to tap into that fan base else it will never have any spectators apart from Ashes. Dropping Samit Patel for being fat, or Monty for getting involved in pub brawl doesnt help that cause. Even now, they are keeping Ali in test side and Rashid on sidelines. Ali will fail to make a impact, Rashid who could make a impact is demoralised and by the time he gets a chance he will be just about to be dropped as another bowler will be sniffing at him. End result, both wont be able to perform and in couple of years will become history.

IPL, BBL, CPL aur ye League 2 months each aur baaki ke Leagues milakar 4 months, to hojayega 1 saal :giggle: RCB ko pura saal harte dekhne ka itna shauk hai kya tujhe :poink:

pushing test matches into september.... not a good idea.... then again its been terrible weather in the so called "summer" and septembers have tended to be a lot warmer than what is the normal in the past few years. What will probably happen is maybe the 2 test series at the start becomes a 2 test series in september. With the mid june to early july becoming their franchise tournament. What i am hearing is the ECB will ask BCCI to release certain Indian internationals in return for allowing all England players to participate in the IPL no restrictions.

Apart from 2 or 3 players, rest all others Poms are useless in T20. Don't think they are gonna be selected by any team. BCCI should not allow any Indian players to participate. ECB :finger:

ECB :finger:[/quote'] ECB has been anti IPL from day one. It finished KP for playing in IPL. There is no way BCCI will allow any player in a league which it knows wont help technique of our batsmen

you will be surprised.... star india and sky who are the movers behind this move are both part of the Rupert Murdoch empire... Maybe the ECB will offer a stake in each franchise to the BCCI to sweeten the deal. More than the ECB its Sky which is pushing for this.

Could be. At the time it was ITV. But since last year,IPL has gone to ECB benefactor Mudroch. Since now IPL is with him, ECB may stop opposing IPL. But larger question is does BCCI really needs ECB as honestly very rarely England produces a star worth IPL. Most of the English players are there to fill in the quota.

Unless the Headingley based team keeps the Yorkshire title (like Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals) I wouldn't watch this. But then it wouldn't really be aimed at people like me anyway, it would be aimed at the young and those who aren't into cricket already. But, if Sky show it you'd still have the same old problem of a low percentage of the population having the facilities to watch it. If it's going to work it needs to be on free TV like the BBL

Most of the English players are there to fill in the quota.[/quote'] well see there is nothing stopping indian franchises like say ambanis purshasing a franchise and using mi players like parthiv patel in there. its a pretty fluid situation atm. but england and wales do have enough stadiums to make it work

that is indeed going to be a problem with regards to sky and viewers.
