horizonspeaks Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 In 2006, Champions Trophy had a qualifying round. That one was among teams ranked 7-8-9-10 and 2 of them qualified for the main round after a round robin. In 2017 Champions Trophy, however, is entirely based on ICC ranking. There are a bunch of issues in this. First, the points gap among teams ranked 6-7-8-9 is only 10. So, the last team losing out of the tournament would miss it narrowly. Team ranked 6th is England (host) and hence the focus is mainly on the other three. Second problem is in fixtures. West Indies didn't have any fixtures post World Cup to prove that they are worth in this tournament. Matches played in last 3 years, considered for ranking, ranges from 80 in case of India to 47 in case of Bangladesh. The two bottom table Pakistan and West Indies played 74 and 54 ODIs, a yawning gap between them. The last one is home-away issue. As FTP is now gone, teams decide bilaterally who's going to play whom. Teams who can negotiate more home series, are obviously in an advantageous position compared to their traveler competitor. In last three years, Bangladesh has played 68% of their matches at home where Pakistan (@UAE/Pakistan) and WI has played 32% and 35% only. Had these points been weighted properly, we could have seen a different ranking picture. I think to be fair, ICC should bring back the qualifier play offs. Otherwise, ability of different boards to negotiate would rule the qualification rather than meritocracy. Unfortunately, this same ranking system will be used in next World cup qualification. It's useless anyway.
thongale Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 ICC ranking should be weighted for home / away / neutral performances.
HippoSucks Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 The qualifier may make the entire Champion's Trophy too long. If they have a small qualifying round between teams ranked 7-10, maybe the team ranked #7 could possibly lose to the team ranked #10 and be ousted from the tournament. Rankings are a better indicator because they consider consistent performances over a long period of time. However home/neutral and away matches should be considered differently in the ICC rankings.
horizonspeaks Posted July 28, 2015 Author Posted July 28, 2015 Qualifier need not be that complicated. 7 play 8 -> Winner Qualifies 9 plays 10 -> Loser eliminated Loser of first match plays Winner of second match -> Winner qualifies. You still prioritize ranking to start with but #10 still has a chance to qualify if it wins consecutive matches.
sourab10forever Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Champions trophy is in 2nd to the WC...when WC has qualifiers..let this be something different. The whole point of giving ranks will be useless if it ain't for any tourny. It's another thing that the ranking system must be changed.agree with OP's last 2 points.
swatpulla Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 Rankings are fine. You don't want a top ranked team getting knocked out over a couple of bad matches. Besides, most teams are quite even when it comes to playing home matches. Bangladesh however seem to be turning their home matches into an unreasonable advantage. Maybe we can have Top 5 qualifying automatically, while the bottom 5 can have some sort of qualifiers.
Lannister Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 There's no need to have qualifications for CT, as it'll make the whole ODI ranking system seem pointless. If your team end up being ranked at 9th in the time gap of 4 years, then the blame is on you not the system.
Unicorn Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 The funny thing is that cut off date is 2 years before the tournament. So if Pakistan misses out, hypothetically, they can be ranked within top 3 by the time of Champions Trophy. Then it would be a shame that one of the top 3 teams is not playing in the tourney. Cut off date should atmost be 6 months before the tourney.

The cut off date is too early but a transformation from being a terrible ODI side (ranked #9) to one of the best in the world (ranked top 3) is extremely unlikely to occur for any team. At most the team who does not qualify for this edition of the Champion's Trophy can be ranked at around #5. However one thing which is more likely is that a top team right now (ranked high enough so that they qualify for the Champion's Trophy) becomes a terrible one in the next two years and potentially falls out of the top 8. Then it would be rather odd for them to participate...

You can replace West Indies for Pakistan if you like. This is something that ICC need to fix. The cut off date is way too early.
Anik Krishna Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Now BD has finally qualified..that's why this good for nothing threads are coming in. This is your fault (G8 teams) that don't invite us ?? What shall we do then !!!
Executioner Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 all this complications when Bangladesh have started doing well. Well tbh, our home advantage thing is nothing signficant in the last few matches because in the last 6 months it was our fast bowling unit that has done the job for us rather than our spinners. I don't really recall our spinners doing anything at all.

BlueBee Posted August 1, 2015 Posted August 1, 2015 I'm all for this ranking based qualification but the cut off date is too early.
