Precambrian Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Straight to the issue. Pakistan toured SL in July-Aug 2015 for a three test series. Mr Sangakkara played the first two tests and conveniently chose to play county cricket instead of participating in the crucial decider which ultimately went Pakistan's way. With such an attitude, I have no idea how he was allowed to have a farewell series - in which too he participated only in the first two tests, skipping the third to serve his beloved English cricket. The most surprising thing is this has been conveniently ignored by the anglo centric press. I cannot find an article bemoaning this in Cricinfo which otherwise considers itself as the guardian of sorts of test cricket :cantstop: Russell Arnold was the only guy with balls strong enough to criticize Sanga over air. But nobody supported his argument and by the time the over break was done, he was made to shut up as well. He had a very valid point, if Sanga chose to prioritize county over test cricket, it meant his heart was no longer in SL cricket, so why was he playing the current series. Discuss.

But strangely English media has not even made a mention of it.

He cut a deal with the board to retire after the first two tests. Can't find any fault if that's the case.

jusarrived Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I dont think it was cut short cos of his county commitments , rather it looked like he extended it on the boards insistence . Hes retired very gracefully not hanging on to some personal record , lot of respect for him on that regard .

Also, maybe he has lost the desire which kinda reflected in the way he has batted in this series. Had he continued for another year in the current scenrio, his averages and all would have come down. However, I do have a question. Shouldn't he look to stick around to build and guide this SL team? They are just full of novices right now.

Could have played until he equalled or went beyond Don's double 100 record. Herath in bowling and Matthaus in batting are sufficient. Likes of Thirimanne, Silva, Chandimal and Karunaratne have all played over 20 Tests - more experienced than Dhawan, Rahul, Rahane, etc. If anything, one should argue that Ind need an experienced player somewhere in top 6.

But yes, I reckon there were quite a few records for the taking.

He timed his retirement smartly.
