who is india's best test keeper

brushing aside all the hate towards dhoni in recent months and evaluating his performances, dhoni has to be india's best test keeper ... ever. solid average, rising to 47 at home along with his keeping skills which were thoroughly underplayed towards the end of his career. i don't think Engineer or Mongia could match him

Syed Kirmani was a solid wicket keeper but a mediocre batsman.

Many keepers were better than Dhobi at keeping - Mongia, More, Kirmani, Engineer, etc. In terms of batting, only 1 keeper was on par with Dhobi: Kunderan (a keeper-batsman) averaged 43 when he opened in Tests, as opposed to 32+ avg overall. Arguably the best batsman amongst the Indian keepers along with Dhobi. Combine the two, and I reckon that only Engineer would run him close.

Bit harsh that - Kirmani was no worse than Rodney Marsh, Ian Healey, etc... amongst his near contemporaries Dujon and Knott were better bats, but Kirmani was better than the likes of Bari at keeping. I'd also rate his keeper as better than "solid" - it was good (at the very least).

India has produced 3 ATG batsman so I would prefer a great keeper who is a mediocre batsman over someone like Dhoni (who is a decent batsman and keeper). Especially with India's bowling the team can't afford messy wicket-keeping.

Kirmani was definitely a better batsman than Bari but I would say Bari was the better keeper.

For me Kirmani would keep in India's all-time XI. India has produced 3 ATG batsman so I would prefer a great keeper who is a mediocre batsman over someone like Dhoni (who is a decent batsman and keeper). Especially with India's bowling the team can't afford messy wicket-keeping.

It has, quite possibly, produced more than that - if not for Merchant's interrupted career, he would have joined this list. I'd recommend Engineer - better batsman than Kirmani and better keeper than Dhobi.

Sorry, my bad - I meant to say batting since I was discussing his batting skills wrt others. For me, he was the equal of Marsh (Aus), some of the NZ keepers (except perhaps I. Smith) in batting and better than Bob Taylor (Eng) and Bari (Pak) at batting. Amongst the major Test teams of that era, only Dujon was the better batsman.

Dhoni will win this contest hands down in tests. In ODIs there will be no contest. Dhoni is a strong contender for selection as keeper in a second or third string World XI team - closing out the Indian XI will be child's play for him.

If you mean World All-Time XI in ODIs, Dhobi ought to be one of the primary candidates even for the first-choice XI. His only rivals are ABDV, Sanga and Gilly; the former is not a regular keeper, the second enjoyed a surge in form only for 3-4 yrs and Gilly was undoubtedly a match-winner but also prone to inconsistency as his avg of 36 suggests.

But I believe he's talking about an all-time test XI.
