Rankings Watch: T20 Internationals

With so much cricket going on in different formats it is good idea to keep track of rankings.

Below are the ICC rankings and Alternative rankings (based on my rules, unless someone has better proposal please share)

I will try to keep this updated once a month.

Alternative rankings

Based simple rules:
1) Matches involving only Test nations are counted.
2) Take into account last two years.
3) Sorted by points, Win = 3 pts, Tie = 1 pts, Loss = -1 (Negative points to counter team playing more matches than other teams)
4) Sorted by Pts, then Run Rate

Suggestion

If possible try to give weightage to wins and losses. For e.g. For a top side - 10 wins vs Zim is not the same as 10 wins vs SA. Also a loss vs SA is not the same as a loss vs Zim (a big upset) 

You could probably group the teams based in two groups - Top 5 and Bottom 5 to give the weightage. Since the table is dynamic, the teams and groups positions will change.  Then you utilize win to loss ratio to rank teams (vs. using points and you don't have to worry about the number of games played)

 

Points calculation

* If a top 5 wins vs. another top 5 (T5) team, it is 1 win 

* If a top 5 team wins vs bottom 5 (B5) team, it is 0.80 win

Vice versa,

* If a top 5 team  losses vs a top 5, it is 1 loss

* If a top 5 loses vs a bottom 5, it is 1.25 loss 

Similarly, 

* if a B5 wins/loses vs another B5 = it gets 1 for win/loss

* If a B5 wins/loses vs a T5 - it gets 1.25 for the win and 0.8 for the loss respectively 

 

 

To illustrate, let's take Ind and SA's last 6 games before the on-going tournaments:

In your table, Ind, SA and NZ are in T5; while Aus, Eng and SL are in B5

 

* Ind played 3 vs Aus (B5), 3 vs SL (B5)

* SA = 2 vs Eng (B5) , 2 vs Ind (T5), 2 vs NZ (T5) 

 

Ind

Ind's Wins = 3(0.8 Aus) + 2 (0.8 (SL)) = 4

Losses = 1(1.25 SL) = 1.25

So W/L = 4/1.25 = 3.2

SA

SA wins = 2(0.8 Eng) + 2(1 Ind) + 1(1 NZ) = 4.6

SA Losses = 1 (1 NZ) = 1

W/L = 4.6

 

The team with higher W/L score is rated higher
