This is sad and frustrating. I can understand the sentiments behind bringing back the bodies to India but sometimes it's not practical.

I have donated my body to medical science.

Did you have to talk about this with your family?

Excellent.

I have heard of cases when someone wished to donate organs upon death, but the family did not know or did not go through with it in the end, and then this creates unnecessary stress/legal problems.

Even if one has a donor card on person ,the approval of the next of kin is required in India.(this is what I have heard).

Next of kin can donate even without the wish of the deceased ...as in without the written or verbal wish.

The spouse is the first in line to make this decision followed by children .
