Umpire's Call

DRS for now is doing a fairly good job at catching howlers. Eventually, as technology progresses, DRS could be capable of providing real time LBW decisions without human intervention and appeal process (review) might involve a human validating the decision made by the system.

 

The contentious part would be the umpire's call, the grey zone that allows for a margin for error. 

 

Here's how I would envision the current umpire's call translating into an affirmative decision. This could be placed into effect even before technology starts making realtime decisions. 

 

2 or 3 paraneters that are judged as umpire's call - give the benefit of the doubt to the batsman (NOT OUT)

 

Only 1 parameter is judged as Umpire's call then, for each parameter

 

If pitching in line is judged as umpire's call - give benefit to bowler (OUT)

If hitting in line is judged as umpire's call - give benefit to bowler (OUT)

If hitting wickets is judged as umpire's call - give benefit to batsman (NOT OUT)

The Hawkeye took like forever today on two decisions. They really need to minimise the human element to get drs decisions faster. Otherwise the number of reviews can never be increased.

I would instead say the umpire should let the third umpire know why he gave an OUT / NOT OUT DECISION, so the umpire's call can be applied to the right aspect of an LBW decision.

 

If the umpire thought it pitched and hit in line, but was going to be missing, so gives it NOT OUT, while hawk-eye shows it was 50/50 for pitching in line, but going on to hit the stumps, then it is not umpire's call.. Because in the umpire's mind it was pitching in line, so a 50/50 call should go in favor of the bowler and not the umpire.
