Bumper Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Bucknor's personal conversation with his grandson Jr. Bucknor, was tapped by the BCCI. Some shocking facts came out of this episode! Jr: Hello grandpa, how are you ? Bucknor: I am fine dear, how about you ? Jr: I need your help. I failed in my high school exams. I failed the qualifier for govt service. I have also flunked in several other exams too (I cant recall every one of them). I am so dejected grandpa! Bucknor: Dont worry son. You can still become an ICC referee. Didnt daddy tell you that i failed to graduate from middle school ? It was competitive you know, in those days, middle school was tough. Jr: Is that right, tell me how i can become an ICC referee ? Bucknor: I must warn you though, that the ICC referee position is very competitive. Your skills will be put to severe test. You have to prove that you can count from one to six (which I am sure you will learn on the job), stand in the ground like a lamp post for hours, make quick moves between square leg and the bowler's crease between overs. And when it gets to a point, where you cannot see the players and your colleagues, you just offer light to the batsmen. You will undergo an eye test and hearing test, when you apply. Jr: But grandpa, dont i have to memorise the rules ? Bucknor: The rules are simple dear. If the ball hits the pad, you raise your finger. If it goes past the bat, you raise your finger. When in doubt, raise your finger. Its very easy to practise. With experience, you will also learn to pick the right teams to raise your finger to. It takes years of practise to reach that level. Jr: Thanks Grandpa! Did you get my christmas card ? Bucknor: Was that you son ? Sorry i tossed it, couldnt see/read the sender's name properly. Jr: You cant see ? How did you pass ICC's eye test ? Bucknor: Oh, that was tough. I entered the room & shook hands with the wrong official. It was embarrassing. I failed to read everything they threw at me. Fortunately, it was Benson who was testing me. He himself could not see much, you know. He put my scores on the wrong card. How do you think Shepherd was booted out of the elite panel, hee hee ? Jr: Thanks grandpa. How can i apply ? Bucknor: You send in your application to Cricket Australia, son. They will test you for color blindness. If you pass, your application will then be forwarded to Mr. Speed & eventually approved. I'll see to it (ahem), make sure, its approved. Jr: Love you grandpa. Bye! Bucknor: Bye son!
