For Indian Cricket to improve learn from US Baseball

Recommended Posts

I know lot of people will disagree but moving forward that is the way. For e.g. many years back only one coach was there and now multiple coaches like batting, bowling and fielding these concepts are borrowed from baseball. For todays game the team selection should have been out of the hand of captain. It should be the job of the manager with position coach to decide. If the manager talked to batting coach no way UV plays based on current form. For bowling I have been harping for a while that against SL maybe we need three fast bowlers. They can play spinners very well. need to create mismatches and that was not there. Strategy - need to keep thinking which is managers job. Dhoni uses his instincts which is not scientific. Every batsman has to be bowled according to plan. He played spin so much that lankans settled down. Those instructions should come from manager not the captain if he cannot think fast. this was a very winnable game but was lost because of morons.

LOL!
Stone ages still. Need to watch some baseball and then you will understand the science behind sports. Every baseball player is much more fitter than any cricket player in India. This is a concept which is so difficult to grasp.

The concept is called 'Performance enhancing drugs' something baseball has been grappling forever. So thanks but 'no thanks'. Baseball has lost its relevance in the US and if it wasn't for the illegal hispanics flooding in, MLB would have lost ground to even nascar (which is motorsport for dummies, cos they have drivers running in circles. Things like circuits, sharp bends, chicanes are too complicated for an average american to comprehend!!) Baseball has been diminishing behind NFL and NBA, its presently hanging on as a distant 3rd. Ask a baseball player to stand at point and field/catch a cut shot played of a delivery at 140k, not a baseball, a heavy red cricket ball, the guy will poo in his pants.

Well there are traditional methods available like sending instructions via the 12th man, if only you wanted to. Dhoni, being the stubborn mule he is was simply sitting like a duck while Yuseless was eating balls. Bowling changes are best handled by the captain. If you have a worthless captain, may be time to get a new one.

You know so little. Some use performance enhancing drugs but not all do. testing is pretty comprehensive. Have you ever seen a baseball player in real life. It is a treat to watch. along with basketball they are the fittest one can see. Baseball has not lost relevance though TV market is less. 140K is nothing. They regularly pitch at 150 k plus and the ball travels much faster. Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do. It is exponentially more difficult than hitting a cricket ball. Let us not turn this into cricket vs baseball but see what one can learn.

Bowling changes could be done with two or three guys with hand signals also.

none of them were spinning the ball. SL out thought India and created better mismatches. That is how every sport is played.
point is they wouldnt have played 3 pacers if they dont have allrounders. We dont have that luxury unless you want to play Binny

Kya faaltu baate kar raha hai. It's just a match. There's a WC next year. Then a CT next year. Then a WT20 next year. Then a WC next year. Then a ... Abhi to sab ke sab jeet nahi sakte. No one wins everything in any sport. But with India's team we'll win loads of stuff in the future.

Well if you know baseball at all, drugs has been an ongoing problem in baseball for atleast a decade and they still have not been able to curb it. The players are alienated once convicted but its pretty obvious the entire set up is involved. Drugs keep evolving and steroid abuse is rampant even in minor leagues. Simply look at the number of repeat offenders..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Major_League_Baseball_players_suspended_for_performance-enhancing_drugs So let them stick their fitness mantras up their backsides and leave it inside the states.
Have you ever seen a baseball player in real life. It is a treat to watch. along with basketball they are the fittest one can see.
Well your concept of what 'one can see' is quite limited. I have seen Mick Skinner in real life and Im pretty sure the fitness of rugby players are on a different planet altogether. By rugby I don't mean the buffoonery americans watch where guys huff and puff wearing helmets and pillows. And my knowledge on sports is limited so there might be plenty of sports out there who can give us lessons........but baseball yeah right.
140K is nothing. They regularly pitch at 150 k plus and the ball travels much faster.
So does a tennis ball and a badminton shuttle.......the thing is comparing a leather cricket ball with a baseball is like comparing a 0.5 calibre to a pea shooter.........to make things easier for you to comprehend the pea is the baseball in this context.
Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do. It is exponentially more difficult than hitting a cricket ball.
Most things are hard for americans. In cricket a waist high full toss is sent outside the stadium.

Your overanalyzing a stupid T20 match ... one team win one day the other can win the next ... high amount of randomness in a twenty overs match.
To me T20 is the purest form of test cricket. test matches can take a hike.

Drugs are a problem in Cricket too. If you dont think Australians and SA and British players are doing it then we dont share the same planet. In baseball they are caught in cricket they are ignored. Fitness is everything. I dont see how you dont believe in that. baseball is the closest. I will let you figure out why hitting a baseball is hardest thing to do. If you cant figure it out I will help.

I dont know how your childish imagination conjures up such nonsense, but I'll try and help.... The explanation is easy, its because they don't. These countries have a far better sporting culture than americans. Also they are willing to sign up and comply anti doping regulations, the only reluctant member was the BCCI. A bowler who swings or spins the ball, a batsmen who drives, cuts, defends the ball, they need skill, injecting stuff like dumb american athletes will not help cricketers improve their game. Its actually detrimental especially in longer formats of the game. So moral of the Story is 'Cricket is a game that requires far far more skill and injecting oneself with nonsense is not the way forward.' So much for american fitness lessons...lol
Fitness is everything. I dont see how you dont believe in that.
Fitness is very important, but baseball players are not benchmarks for any kind of sport. Ask these baseball player to play a 5 day test and bowl spells at 140ks, delivering 50 odd overs, they'll be panting like rabid dogs!!!
I will let you figure out why hitting a baseball is hardest thing to do. If you cant figure it out I will help.
I replied earlier, so here it goes again......
Most things are hard for americans. In cricket a waist high full toss is sent outside the stadium.
Heck they even made metal bats for americans so that they find it easier to play a full toss!!!! Most cricket batsmen would hit that out of the ground with a stump!!

Gilchrist did adopt some baseball hitting techniques that helped him in the WC final 2007 and first few seasons of IPL when he was hugely successful......there are some things we can definitely adapt. Could be useful for T20 Atleast. Also Aussies during their peak era did adopt some outfield throwing techniques from baseball. Apart from that cricket requires a lot more skill

Even the highest grossed MLB player A. Rod was banned. I used to be a huge baseball fan back in the days before I realized it's pretty boring compared to cricket. On average the baseball actually travels somewhat faster because pitch length is 6 ft shorter and the pitcher is chucking. The only time when they clock 100MPH is in 9th inning a closer trying to close the game for the starting pitcher. Mithcell Johnson, Dale Steyn clocks 90 MPH for 5 days worth of test cricket whereas baseball pitchers most of the time don't go past 7th innings. Yes, baseball is much harder to hit than cricket because of bat size. Baseball=pitchers game whereas cricket=batsman game. In Baseball batsman also blindly swings at anything which is why even really bad pitching can get you strike outs. US athletes in general are the fittest in the world no matter what the sport is. Even in soccer our players are more fitter than even European who plays soccer a lot more. But really NBA players are the most fittest. I see so many fat over sized baseball hitters.

completely different sports, however putting a baseball in play is much much harder than putting a cricketball in play since the playing area is restricted and bats are thinner and round, a cut shot in cricket will be a foul in baseball, so there is no element of luck involved.

You usually chew gum and go back to dug out 75% of the time. The average batting is .275 meaning only 27.5% of time the ball will be in play. They also make lot more money than cricket players. Nonetheless, if US decides to adopt cricket I am pretty sure we can do well in it too.

Even how they throw from the outfield is a treat. All those motions conserve energy and minimize injury.

this comes down to which game you more closely follow. im sure americans feel same way about cricket.
Mithcell Johnson, Dale Steyn clocks 90 MPH for 5 days worth of test cricket whereas baseball pitchers most of the time don't go past 7th innings.
pitching is a much more strenuous and damaging to the arm than bowling, that's why majority of pitchers already blow their elbows and require tommy john surgery.
In Baseball batsman also blindly swings at anything which is why even really bad pitching can get you strike outs.
sorry but this quote just destroys all your credibility when discussing baseball. they don't blindly swing at the baseball. a swing has mechanics to it and is highly complex. there is also an art of 'taking' pitches or fouling of good pitches to make pitches work extra hard. im guessing you haven't watched many baseball games

Some people on this forum are trivializing the game of baseball. They dont understand no one on Indian cricket team can pass the physical strength or endurance of any baseball player.

Cricket does not require any more skill than any other sport.
Well Cricket easily requires a lot more skill than baseball. First of all batting is not simply swinging blindly at a ball and then look up to the sky and pray. Chucking the ball is a lot lot easier than bowling overarm down 22 yards. The art of spin......never mind the fact that its a sport even americans are beginning to give up on shows the general direction baseball is heading.
No cricket player in Indian team can pass a benchmark fitness test of baseball.
Not a single pitcher in baseball history will survive the pressure of bowling in a 5 day test, sending down 300 odd deliveries. Their steroid fuelled bodies will crumble after the first two days itself. Also there are plenty of rotund baseball players, many of whom will give Stuart Binny a run for his money!!
Even one of the famous chappel kids tried all his life to play baseball but could not make it.
Who was the 'famous' kid never heard of and dont care!! Chappels are hardly the benchmark in anything, India got rid of a chappel as well. OZs should leave baseball to illegal hispanics.

The only thing harder in baseball than cricket is to bunt a ball (aka pick up a single): its much harder to control deflections and given that you have to run, there is no second chance to do it right. Otherwise, everything in baseball is easier. Pitching is easier than bowling. But its not really a fair comparison because its like comparing a 100m runner to a 5k runner. Pitching in baseball is about pitching 45-50 perfect pitches at most. in cricket you bowl atleast as much and sometimes, far far more. Plus, bowling in cricket is far more skilled, since you can do so much more with the ball but cannot compromise accuracy. yes, making contact with a baseball bat and ball is harder but it is a simpler consideration. The batter in baseball is at all times thinking of a home run or at most, a bunt only 10% of the times. In baseball all home runs are a product of essentially one stroke (the swipe0. A cricket batter is thinking of dozen different strokes he could be playing depeding on where the ball is pitching and what it is doing, which is essentially, a more complicated thought process. And lets not even start with fielding. Baseball fielders are athletic but so are Indian fielders. I doubt there are very many baseball fielders who could out-run azharuddin, kaif, yuvraj(pre-cancer), Jadeja, Kohli, etc. and catching a cricket ball with bare hands is exponentially harder than catching a softer & bigger baseball with giant mittens. Having said that, there are things cricketers could learn from baseball. baseball's drills are excellent at breeding hand-eye coordination. and bowlers can learn about grips and releases (though good luck replicating them as they are chucks in cricket and most things cannot be replicated because your fingers & wrist move different when elbow is locked(or supposed to be locked)) Particularly, it is possible for spinners to learn new ways of generating drift & for pacers to generate swing.

let me guess, you watched a 5 minute baseball tutorial on youtube and decided to comment anyway. learn the game first. you cant compromise accuracy in baseball, if you do you walk batters (look up what a walk is on youtube) and the manager will pull you out of the game within 20-30 pitches.

Clearly an ignorant crap from flat earther. Baseball has lot more variation than you can even comprehend. Baseball is thriving and doing great. I dont know where you come up with the crap. Not a sinle cricket player can make it through the conditioning camp of baseball. This chappel kid was fit to play cricket for Australia but got cut by blue jays just like that. Once again a dimwit like you needs to understand hitting the baseball is the hardest thing to do in the world.
