Far from the ongoing IPL 2017 hullabaloo, around 7,000 km away, Ireland and England begin their two-match ODI series with the first one being played at Bristol on Friday. The series will conclude at Lord’s, another venue where Ireland play their first match. The sides have clashed 7 times earlier, the biggest upset of which came in ICC World Cup 2011 where Ireland had triumphed over England by 3 wickets with 5 balls to spare. Kevin O’Brien had struck a century off a mere 50 deliveries, then the fastest century in World Cup history. That remains the only win for Ireland over England in the 50-over format.

Ireland are clearly regressing and struggling to come up with the next generation of players.   Do they have a proper pipeline of players coming through? Some of the names on the scorecard are probably in their late 30s by now.  They may not entirely go the Kenya route, but its not looking that good.

England are likely to keep an unchanged team so there chould be no place for Steven Finn or Ben Duckett, neither of whom are in England's Champions Trophy squad. Given the green tinge on the pitch and Root's performance with the ball at Bristol, Moeen Ali will likely also miss out unless England opt to rotate him in for one of the seamers. After recent injuries to Mark Wood, David Willey and Liam Plunkett, the England selectors may decide to give them some more overs and leave Ali for when the weather improves and the pitches flatten out.

 

Ireland

 

Ireland may also be unchanged but not, as with England, because they have a settled and in-form team but because they have limited options in their squad. There is no reserve batsman on the trip so the batting line-up will remain the same. The bowling attack, led by Peter Chase, did a solid job considering the paltry target they had to defend in Bristol but fast bowler Stuart Thompson, who conceded 30 runs from his three overs, may be replaced by Barry McCarthy or Craig Young. Left-arm spinner George Dockrell may be replaced by off-spinner Andrew McBrine, a decent lower order batsman, as much to strengthen the batting as anything.
