Australia “all systems go” for Bangladesh tour, says Sutherland

The uncertainty over Australia’s tour of Bangladesh took a big step towards being resolved, with James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, saying on Wednesday (May 10) that it was all “all systems go” from their point of view, pending final security and fixture clearances.

“We’re just working through all the details,” said Sutherland to cricket.com.au about the late-August visit. “I’m very pleased to be at a stage of really fine-tuning the detail – there are still some things that we need to work through just to lock down on security.

“Once our hosts have locked in dates and the schedule, then from us it’s all systems go, subject to any security concerns we might have. From all the research we’ve done and the work we’ve done with Foreign Affairs and others through government agencies, we’re confident the tour will take place.”

Australia were scheduled to play two Tests and a tour match in Dhaka and Chittagong in October 2015, but the tour was postponed after concerns over the security of the team. They also withdrew the Under-19 side from last year’s World Cup in the country.

England’s tour of Bangladesh in October last year went ahead without any incident after being given an unprecedented level of security, which might have helped convince Australia to travel.

Australia last visited Bangladesh in 2006, when they swept the Test series (2-0) and One-Day International series (3-0) under Ricky Ponting. Since then, the two teams have played just two bilateral ODI series, once in Darwin in 2008 and then in Dhaka in 2011.

If the tour – possibly of two Test matches, even though there has been talk of a few limited-overs games too – does take place, the two matches will be Australia’s only five-day fixtures between now and the Ashes series later in the Australian summer.
