Extremely low Bowling speeds in county cricket and Natwest T20 tournament

So I have been following some county cricket as it is being covered well on Watch ESPN both t20s and List A games and have seen many English local bowlers, who are the spearheads of their attack bowling at just 70-83 miles. 

 

In fact in the current on going Natwest T20 blast, Collingwood is bowling 4 overs per game and is the "main" bowler who bowls his full quota pretty much every game. He was bowling today between 65-74 miles. 

 

The ODI game is changing a lot and it is showing that pace even though important needs to be varied. English bowlers were bowling well but were varying pace.

 

This is different when it comes to Test Matches as you have to be more spot on and the pace is important there, but for ODI's variations are getting really important and English bowlers are concentrating a lot on variations. 

 

Bowling at 70 mile consistently isn't good, but varying the pace if you are regular 85 mile or higher pace bowler is important.  Even Southie, Philander, Boult, Morkel did the same in the recent NZ/RSA ODI series in New Zealand on short grounds where runs were easy to get. Southie and Boult kept bowling at 120-13ks to trouble the South African players and not give them pace to hit the ball. 

 

Our bowlers need to work on pace, but it is extremely important to get the variations. 

 

One bowler who does that for India is Bhuvneshwar Kumar in ODI's. Bumrah has a brilliant slow ball but needs to get his consistency back and can be the most deadiy bowler if he starts varying his pace more often. Pandya needs to add this to his armory and so does Shami and all the upcoming bowlers like Thampi.

Definitely, adding more weapons like this to the armory will do wonders. However, pace should continue to be encouraged. We've only started to build a pace culture.

Yes, this is only about ODI game and pqce should be indeed encouraged regardless of the format. Unless you have good pace, your slow deliveries can't be as effective.

 

Hence a slow one from Bumrah or Pandya can be a big weapon since they both have more than decent pace. 

 

Bumrah has actually already proved how good his slow ball is. He is actually the best in the world already with Tymal Mills.

But guys like Dwayne Bravo who are not express pace,  continue to get loads of wickets by varying pace in the LOI and that needs to be encouraged alongside pace bowling.

 

Bowlers need to be made aware that unless they have variations, they will be easily found out at the international level.

Yep, pretty handy. Even after all these years and even though he might look predictable at times with his slow ones, but even then he has been successful. That is because he has added other variations such as the low full tosses and changing line and length according to the batsman and changing his fielders positions and bowling to his field so that the batsmen are held out at the boundary if they try to slog or at the 30 yard circle.

It is better to have separate sets of bowlers for T20s..... who will specialize in change of pace.

 

Our main test pacers, trying to do this, may result in them messing up their ball release and seam positions.

 

I would like Shami and Umesh to stick to normal quick bowling   .... and develop some new T20 pacers.
