Is Yo-Yo test a farce used to just keeping undesired players out?

How is it that Ashwin is able to pass it? He is hardly able to move with agility and field normal deliveries.

I know it tests endurance but is it really a proper test for cricketers if it is not able to differentiate players who can be agile on the field vs those whose body is lethargic? If the test is only for endurance then I guess it should be used only for Tests, as in LOIs endurance doesn't matter much. It is agility that's required in LOIs.

So if someone young like Washington Sundar is said to be not able to pass the Yo-Yo test, then is the test just a farce used to keep out undesired players out of squad?

lot of jobs these days seem to suggest that u have to have xyz degree to do the job. idea is to challenge the youngster to be qualified for the job

modern day cricket is running hard, diving , travelling - a lot . yo yo test seems to test agility thereby ensuring less breakdowns.

dhoni , kohli - they are superfit and the board wants such dedicated fit guys

now whether they are that skillful is another debate . an inzy today will have to not rely on batting alone to get in . 10 good batters out there - chose one with best allround ability ( fielding makes u an allrounder i feel ) they should device some slio catching yo yo as well ( virat will fail!)

Test crickets can afford players who fail Yo Yo test. But such tests are needed in odis and T20s. May be with varying entry requirements. However, players should be told in advance. Every stadium Ind India has indoor facility good enough to conduct this test. As Test does not require massive equipment, Tester should be traveling to players and not other wise.

No, Yo Yo test apparently is for Endurance and not agility. That's why I am questioning why it's required, as endurance will be required only in tests to be able to play long innings, bowl long hours and be in the field.

The problem is Yo Yo test doesn't test agility which is what is required in ODIs and T20s. It is an Endurance test which actually is most useful in tests where you have to bat long and bowl a lot.

I thought there was a speed component to it. You do a lot of running in odis and t20s and hence endurance is needed too.

IIRC D Silva and Ranatunga used to allways find a gap for their shots which always was 1.5 runs time or just fraction more but would have allways been short of 2 runs with even most agile players. So at the end depending upon role and player quality, the test can be tweaked.

So, Its should be recommended and not required criteria. Required criteria should allways be quality with bat or ball

If at this level you cannot pass a simple yo yo test you really dont deserve to play.

OP is saying, why different benchmarks?

Sorry I missed it. Did I not understand the question correctly?

If the op is differentiating between agility and endurance. I think endurance has to be one of the metrics. There could be another metrics for agility but that becomes touher to quantify. I still feel at that level yo yo should be an easy peasy test for athletes.
