I wonder if technique is overrated. Players who seem to be only one-day times can do quite well in Test cricket as well. Mental strength may be the difference.

I think those 2 hundreds in the 2nd and 3rd Test in NZ defined him. One innings when India needed to bat over, he went into defensive mode and scored a brilliant and solid 100. Then in the 3rd test when we were looking for quick runs he changed gears and took on the NZ bowlers and scored a quick 100. Ever since I 1st saw him, I've always backed him too.
