IndianRenegade
Gum may bind foes Harbhajan & Symonds New Delhi: Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds may have been the protagonists in one of the biggest controversies to hit cricket in a long time, but the ubiquitous chewing gum might well bring the two cricketers together in the near future. An Indian manufacturer is reported to have sent feelers to the two cricketers to star in a television advertising campaign in which they will say in unison: "gum mein hai dum" (This gum has power). "An Indian chewing gum manufacturer could bring a quirky end to cricket’s great racial spat by doing what the game’s top officials couldn’t. It is understood that initial feelers have been sent out to the warring cricketers and they will examine the proposal in the coming weeks," Australia’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reported. "The extraordinary proposal could cool tensions between Harbhajan and Symonds, who have been at each other’s throats since the combustible Sydney Test where Harbhajan allegedly called the Australian a monkey," the newspaper said. Harbhajan had reacted to a comment by Symonds during the second Test in the recent Test series in Australia which escalated and the Aussie player alleged that the Indian off-spinner had made a racial slur, calling him ‘a big monkey’. The controversy put in jeopardy, both the Test series as well as a tri-series also featuring Sri Lanka, as the Indian cricket Board demanded that the racial slur allegation be dropped. Match referee Mike Procter slammed a three-Test ban on Harbhajan, which was subsequently dropped by Justin John Hansen for lack of evidence. Harbhajan got away with a fine of 50 per cent of his match fee for using offensive language, which was not taken well by the Australians. But now money might just make the foes talk again. There will be neither racial taunts nor offensive language. Only praise for a particular chewing gum. Link to comment
King
Opportunists are everywhere and I can't think of any more enterprising action than this one to get an ad to get popular. Good on the gum making company to even have come up with this idea. Link to comment
coffee_rules
If Harbhajan gets included in the team, it might be more like 'ghum'. Link to comment
