^ Fair point, it looks like the choice of time windows are a bit random and hide certain bad runs. A better stat would be Moving Average with a time window of 3 years, or simply the graph of ICC ranking. There will always be players who will have good run over 2-3 years window. Top batting ranking slots will be under constant shuffle, however if one consistently figures in top 10 of batsmen in most part of his career spanning over 20 years, then he has to be special. Besides, For evaluating consistency, simple arithmetic mean is not the best ( in fact worst) metric. One has to use variance based formulae - e.g. Standard deviation of averages plotted per series Or some other better ( agreed upon) choice of time window - e.g. runs of certain number of matches within some calendar months. Innings by innings would be unfair to players who have long break between two series and form drops from one to another. If someone stat-fan (with programming experince) has lot of time on his hands, here is an interesting visualization. http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/motionchart.html one can plot players as bubbles on the graph, where size of the bubbles indicate batting average over a certain time window, or simply at a give time - do it for top 20-30 batsmen at a given time. And one can clearly see, how new bubbles keep forming, growing and then going out of scene, but few remain noticeable throughout or longer than others.
