So true , when I see my cousins loose sleep over their class X or XII exams I always say "Yaar its not the most important thing that you'll ever do in your life" and the I get a strange stare from the maa - baaps. Anyway I had a medical problem when I was in class X and attended school for not more than 5 days and managed to get 52% without any tuitions .. My parents were more proud of me than my IIT-ian brother :yay:
Wow, Awesome dude ! respekt !

Yep, I tell my cousins the same thing when I talk to India. They keep worrying about some % or marks in this or that, and its all not a big deal. But its a big sweat back in India in that rat race.

:D That does give us a LOT of clues about your % Proff. The telling fact is, most of these high-scoring heroes have ended up having mediocre, run of the mill careers, while my other friends, who studied in other, normal schools, have go on to shine massively, whether be it in work, or in post graduation. Imagine this, I score more than 95% in my boards and the day after the results came, we all went to school to meet with teachers, discuss the Cut-offs and stuff and hearing the other students' marks, I just felt like hiding my face behind some doors. Pardon me if I sound over the top for repeating my % several times, but I now realize how artificial all that % hoopla was.
In that respect, I really owe a lot to my school. There was some recent survey of schools in India and while it featured quite a few schools from Lucknow, St. Francis was nowhere in the rankings. Looking at the criteria I kind of felt good about it. There is the "premier academic institution" in Lucknow called Cit Montessori who specialize in churning out these high percentages that you are talking about. Of course, Lucknow being predominantly ICSE board and my times being a few years behind yours the percentages were lower. But, there was a regular culture in our school where almost everyone involved in any sport would show up in the evenings around 5 to just play for a couple of hours. The place used to be bustling at basketball courts, cricket field, and hockey field. It was a matter of pride to show up and play for an hour or so in the evening regardless of whether you had finished your homework or not. The best "House" (the entire school was divided in 4) was decided on the combination of performances in sports and extra curricular activities like debates and extempores with 0 weight given to academics. It was the time to let yourself grow and find what you like. To develop what you like, you've got a a lifetime.

You are right. Brainwashing in India starts from the day the child is born :D Study, dont waste time playing. Study, dont waste...study, dont waste... Then later on after all the education is over, and real life takes over, thats when they will realize all the % arent worth that much, and overall personality and social development is very important. If only parents realized that sports (just as an example) actually also can be a career option?
Why just sports ? There are SO many other avenues, like law, media management, journalism, art, film making, photography. But the dumb rule nowadays is, Everyone has to become an Engineer ! Anyways, all this talk of school and % makes my blood boil ( as usual) :D

but in year XII I attended school regularly but it didnt have a great impact on my % ... 72% :hysterical:
Who cares, you probably have a much better career/job than most of your classmates who scored more than you. :two_thumbs_up:

You got it wrong. First they'll ask you to become a Doctor and if you can't, only then Engineer :D (even with IT giving a fight, i think Doc is still big deal there) PS: Sportz was just an example, so many avenues, and thingz to explore like u pointed out. The NARROW MINDED outlook should be overthrown.

Yep' date=' I tell my cousins the same thing when I talk to India. They keep worrying about some % or marks in this or that, and its all not a big deal. On the other hand, if you let your natural personality flourish either you will never need to care about GPAs/GREs or they will come so naturally to you that you need not put in more than an honest effort.

Its the smartness that makes you successful not just % in class X but of course you need qualifications too. Its so pathetic that in some cases parents ban TV for an entire year just cause its BOARDS .:omg:

LOL! Yes, in India - if it is studies, they ban sports, ban tv, ban whatever elz... Luckily, I did not have bans like this, as long as I kept to allocated times during exams.

teachers in my school were absolutely forbidden from using physical violence against students or for that fact even raising their voice. punishment was always of the order: take laps of the field (which was done away with when one poor girl suffering from asthama was made to endure that punishment); extra assignment; or worse still sent back home before school was out.

I didnt really study for 10th or 12 grade :D my neighbor was a trustee in the best college in mumbai, and I wasnt really a bad student, so I didnt really have to break my head over 10th grade.. and even before I gave grade 12 exams, I was admitted in the universities I wanted to go to.. so wasnt really arsed. There was a 15 day break between my secondlast and last board exam, so I went to goa :D
