While the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) set up its own committee, Maharashtra Minister of Forests Sudhir Mungantiwar ordered an inquiry through an independent committee to find out the facts on whether guidelines and procedures given in SOP were followed. And the dart found lodged in its left thigh did not show any impact of being “fired from a syringe projector” (tranquilising gun). These conclusions in the post-mortem witness report submitted by a representative of the Maharashtra forest department contradict the department’s own claim that the tigress was gunned down by them in self-defence after it charged at the team that had fired a tranquiliser dart to immobilise the animal. While the post-mortem report notes that “fascia beneath darted needle was intact”, the witness report includes photographs to elaborate that “the cannula of the dart had gone into the sub-cutaneous layer and had not penetrated into the underlying muscle”. The witness report states: “There was no haemorrhage observed in the muscles at the darting site. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (APCCF) Sunil Limaye said, “Our teams have gone to the spot and we hope to catch them. The cubs which were spotted on Thursday at Vihirgaon in Yavatmal plausibly have no takers with the Forest Department and wild life experts stating that the only option is to keep them in captivity. The committee said there was no operational coordination among veterinary professionals and the team which killed the tigress on November 2 in Yavatmal and that the dart for tranquilizing the feline was fired unauthorisedly. T1C1 and his female sibling, T1C2, were then about a year old. While T1C2 was captured 50 days after the death of their mother and sent to a large enclosure in the Pench Tiger Reserve, the hunt for T1C1 continues, making it the longest operation in the country to catch a wild cat.
