Given 355 runs to chase in slightly less than 70 overs on a last day Wankhede wicket, Bombay went for it and almost got there, missing out by 2 runs. Dilip Vengsarkar remained unbeaten on a pristine 139 and Tendulkar blitzed a better than run a ball 96 with a solid contribution from Kambli. The tail could not hold up though and Bombay ended up losing. There was a nice article on the match somewhere on the web which I can't locate right now, but if someone can find it please post it here.

At one time Haryana had the game in its kitty but then Colonel and SRT forged a fantastic partnership. Unfortunately SRT was dismissed short of a well deserved century and Mumbai's lower order panicked. The last man Kuruvilla was run out with Mumbai 2 runs short. Vengsarkar, who was unbeaten on 139, cried in the middle. This is one classic example of how Indians loath their cricketing history(sorry to say). Had this final played between Lancashire and Yorkshire it would have been a folklore by now.

The enduring moment from this match - which just adds to its reputation - is Vengsarkar crying openly on the pitch after Kuruvilla was run out while Haryana celebrated.

coffee_rules Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 I was so glad Mumbai lost that match. Otherwise Kapil Dev would be an Indian ATG never having won a Ranji trophy. In a later interview, Kapil mentioned how he cherished that trophy win till today. In a Indian perspective winning Ranji trophy is like winning the Super Bowl once in a lifetime. Mumbai has won so many Ranjis, it is very fitting to one lose one, albeit close.
Tapioca Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Heard the radio commentary for most of the last day. The most memorable sequence was just after the 9th wicket fell and Bombay required 50. Vengsarkar hit Yogendra Bhandari 26 (3x6, 2x4) in an over. Kapil brought himself back replacing Bhandari. Vengsarkar hit his first ball over long off for another six. Thereafter he mostly ran his runs till the run out at the end. Tendulkar was a big draw even then. There was a crowd of 6000 on the last morning. It went up to 12,000 when Tendulkar went in after lunch.

He would later admit that even though Mumbai were with their back to the wall he knew he had in them to beat Haryana. This was not because Mumbai had great batsmen(which they did) - Manjrekar, Colonol, Kambli, SRT etc - but because Mumbai cricket had that typical attitude in Indian cricket which was made famous by Sunny & Shashtri's one word comment to describe it - khadoos. Kapil would say he knew Mumbai cricketers were khadoos and wouldnt go down easy. That final has some great players really. Other than the obvious culprits you had a Pradeep Jain a very respected spinner, Amarrjeet Kaypee a very high scoring batsman, Lalchand Rajput etc etc.

They are the only team to defeat Bombay outright in two consecutive matches. (Bombay has lost only 17 matches in 70 something years of Ranji Trophy and no team has defeated them more than twice.)

The ball that got Vengsarkar was described as one that swung and seamed out and carried to gully. Please note that I have fixed an error in the earlier post. UP did not win two in a row.

Players like Ashok Malhotra, Shishir Hattangadhi, Rakesh Jolly, Kiran Mokashi, Gulam Parkar, Sarkar Talwar, Raju Kulkarni. This apart from Kapil, Chetan Sharma, Vengsarkar, Ravi Shashtri etc. You have to ask as how many Ranji finals these days field teams like that?
