Muzumdar, the captain, returned from injury to crack a 70-ball 101 as Mumbai ran up a record 398 for 3. The previous record was Bengal's 397 for 5 against Assam in Jamshedpur in 2004. Maharashtra didn't have much of a chance from that point, falling to 182 in 28.1 overs. After the match Mumbai were to get good news from the Deccan Gymkhana, where Saurashtra beat Baroda by a bonus point. It ensured that the title stayed in Mumbai for the second year running. Saurashtra upset the form book with a convincing triumph. Ketan Panchal's fighting hundred kept Baroda in the contest, taking them to 241, but a rollicking 167-run partnership between Sagar Jogiyani and Jaydev Shah allowed Saurashtra to reach the target as early as the 40th over. South Zone Deepak Chougule's unbeaten 111 helped defending champions Karnataka regain the South Zone one-day tournament for the Subbiah Pillai Trophy with a five-wicket win over Tamil Nadu at the Guru Nanak College grounds in Chennai. Chougule was not in the original squad for tournament but a shoulder injury to KB Pawan allowed him to be drafted in. Earlier, left-handed opener R Ramkumar and his 138-run fourth-wicket stand with Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan helped TN to 289. At the MRF Pachyappas Ground, Sagun Kamat (92) and Saurabh Bandekar (101) shared an unbeaten 194-run stand to upstage Kerala's total of 200. The pair helped Goa reach the target in just 33.3 overs. A century from wicketkeeper Abhinav Kumar propelled Hyderabad to 259 before Andhra collapsed for 164 at the Central Polytechnic India Pistons Ground in Chennai. Neither team, though, will make it to the all-India knock-out tournament for the Premier Cup in Visakhapatnam from April 2 to 12. North Zone A six-wicket haul by Vishal Bhatia helped Himachal Pradesh sink Jammu and Kashmir by 104 runs at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. Bhatia, the left-arm spinner, finished with figures of 6 for 15, cutting through the lower order as J & K crashed to 108 in pursuit of 213. Earlier, Hinachal were propped by Paras Dogra's 77. At the Model Sports Complex , Punjab coasted to a comprehensive nine-wicket win against Services. Sunny Sohal and the in-form Karan Goel made light work of the modest target of 153 with an opening stand of 128. Sohal made 56 while Goel remained unbeaten on 79. Earlier, Soomik Chaterjee top scored for Services with 45 in an otherwise meek performance. Haryana surprised the Ranji Trophy champions, Delhi, on their home turf, with a 26-run win at the Feroz Shah Kotla . Batting first, Haryana were helped by half centuries by Sunny Singh and Kamal Benwal before the lower order pushed the score to a match-winning 258. Amit Bhandari, who took 2 for 48, passed the milestone of 150 one-day wickets. Delhi were jolted early in their chase at 57 for 4 and were out of the contest when their captain Mithun Manhas fell for a breezy 57 off 61 balls. At that stage, they were 139 for 6 and a last-ditch half-century by Chetanya Nanda wasn't enough as Delhi managed 232 for 9. East Zone At the North East Frontier Railway Stadium in Guwahati, Jharkhand bagged a three-wicket win against Assam in a low-scoring encounter. Ishank Jaggi scored a patient 58 off 104 balls as Jharkhand chased the target of 162 with two overs to spare. Earlier, S Sharath top scored for Assam with 54 off 91 balls.

well...well...well! Now, this is a very good sign of professionalism and impact of international cricket on our domestic cricket. To some extent ICL is also responsible by initiating fast cricket in India. Now IPL will follow it. But all these are good factors that boosted domestic level.

Pathan five-for sets up thrilling Baroda win The results from the eighth day of the Ranji one-day tournament. More... Ranji Trophy ODI tournament, 8th day Pathan five-for sets up thrilling Baroda win Cricinfo staff March 5, 2008 The following are the summary of results from the eighth day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament 323764.jpg Cheteshwar Pujara got his first century of the tournament in Saurashtra's win over Gujarat © (file photo) Cricinfo Ltd West Zone An all-round effort by Saurashtra's bowlers meant Gujarat were bowled out for a paltry 230 which Saurashtra chased with more than 11 overs to spare at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Sandip Maniar, Balkrishna Jadeja, Rakesh Dhurv and Jayesh Odedra picked up two wickets each for Saurashtra. Half-centuries by Niraj Patel and Sunny Patel took Gujarat past 200 but with no other batsman making a useful score they couldn't post a competitive total. The 106-ball 107 run second-wicket partnership between Sagar Jogiyani (79) and Cheteshwar Pujara (109*) set the tone of the chase. With this win, Saurashtra qualified for the inter-zonal tournament along with Mumbai from West Zone. Baroda won a thriller against Maharashtra after Yusuf Pathan dismissed No. 11 batsman Noor Khan with Maharashtra needing only three more runs to win at the Hindu Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Four half-centuries, including a 38-ball 79 by Rajesh Pawar, took Baroda to 366. Maharashtra matched Baroda's run-rate as opener Ameya Shrikhande, playing only his fourth limited-overs game, hit a 114-ball 124 which included 16 fours and two sixes. When Shrikhande fell in the 31st over, Maharashtra needed another 166 off 110 balls with six wickets in hand. Nikhil Paradkar took charge of the innings and his 34-ball 71 held things together even as Pathan struck thrice in the space of six overs. At the fall of Paradkar's wicket, Maharashtra needed 65 off 54 balls with two wickets left. Ajinkya Joshi, the No. 9 batsman, kept his cool and added 50 off 39 balls with No. 10 Samad Fallah before Pathan had Fallah stumped when only 15 more were needed. Joshi worked with Noor to push the match to the final over but Pathan picked up his fifth wicket and sealed the game for Baroda with two balls to spare. North Zone Having done well to keep Punjab to 255 in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh scraped home with one delivery to spare. Given the types of scores racked up this season a target of 255 should have been eaten up but HP's line-up struggled. Sandeep Sharma (33), Maninder Bisla (32), Ajay Mannu (40) all got starts but failed to go further, Paras Dogra got 64 from 80 balls but was run out in the 39th over, and Kuldeep Diwan and Sarandeep Singh cut it a bit fine. Diwan, whose unbeaten 34 was a career high, added 26 with Sarandeep (16 not out) from 20 balls to reach the target in 49.5 overs. Having chosen to bat, Punjab's innings was held up by veteran Pankaj Dharmani's 94 and 59 from Uday Kaul, his successor behind the stumps. Vikramjeet Malik and Jitender Mehta struck early to reduce Punjab to 53 for 3 before Dharmani and Kaul add 148. Malik returned towards the slog overs, however, and the duo were separated in succession. Punjab's lower order failed to ignite and ultimately HP left themselves a target that would prove achievable, just. Delhi completed their series of big wins in the tournament as they beat Services by ten wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Services crawled to 206 on the back of Yashpal Singh's 71. Aakash Chopra and Shikhar Dhawan scored centuries and knocked of the target in 27.1 overs. Amardeep Sonkar took 4 for 31 as Haryana bowled out Jammu & Kashmir for 180 and won by 88 runs at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. Sunny Singh scored a sedate 88 and Sachin Rana and Dhruv Singh chipped in with 44 each in Haryana's 268. Sameer Khajuria picked up four wickets as six Haryana wickets fell for 68 runs. But J&K were never in the chase, with their top score being 36. East Zone Rain forced East Zone games - Assam v Tripura and Bengal v Jharkhand - to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. All four teams got four points each.

Ranji One Dayers Chopra, Dhawan do it again for the hosts Delhi while overnight rains had ruled out chances of a scheduled start to the last round of matches of the East Zone one-dayers. HT brings the Ranji Roundup. More... Ranji One Dayers March 05, 2008 First Published: 22:56 IST(5/3/2008) Last Updated: 23:04 IST(5/3/2008) Delhi on top after twin centuries (by- Arjun Sen in New Delhi) Defeat is as intrinsic to sport as victory. But it is how a team bounces back from defeat that separates the good from the ordinary. Delhi had lost their way in their last match against Haryana and with it, their 12-game unbeaten streak. They put in a listless performance, were outplayed and hardly looked like champions. On Wednesday, they had a chance to get back to winning ways and they did just that. The hosts, once again led by aggressive centuries from openers Aakash Chopra (101*, 93b, 17*4, 1*6) and Shikhar Dhawan (100*, 70b, 13*4, 3*6), crushed Services in the last league match of the North Zone one-day tournament. Chopra and Dhawan needed just 27.1 overs to overhaul the target of 204 and hand Delhi their second 10-wicket win in five matches. Chopra and Dhawan were in prime touch as they ripped the Services bowling to shreds. The onslaught started in the third over, which went for 12 runs. The run-rate hardly dropped below 6, and the only battle left in the match was between the two batsmen to reach the three-figure mark first. With the target rapidly approaching, Chopra and Dhawan dealt only in boundaries. They took a liking to the two spinners — Arnav Kush and Abhishek Sakuja — who went for 93 runs in their 11 overs. With hardly 40 runs to get, the two batsmen began a duel to reach the 100-run mark first. Chopra - batting with a runner - was 12 runs shy, while Dhawan was 15 short. From thereon in, every boundary hit by one was followed by two from the other. Everytime Chopra would hit a four and edge ahead, Dhawan would reply with a massive six. Just when it looked like one would be left stranded in the 90s, Dhawan smashed a six to reach his ton, while Chopra, with one needed for the win, reached his with a four. The Delhi dressing room was all smiles after the game, and would now be looking ahead to the knockouts. All's well that ends well. Rain plays spoilsport (by- Nilankur Das in Guwahati) Overnight rains had ruled out chances of a scheduled start to the last round of matches of the East Zone one-dayers. But just 10 minutes of sunshine in the first session on Wednesday ensured that the outfield remained soggy and matches at both venues —the Nehru Stadium and the Railways stadium in Maligaon — were called off in the afternoon. Bengal finished on top of the group with 17 points from four matches after sharing points with Jharkhand due to the wash out. The two points also ensured that Jharkhand finish second in the group with 11 points and qualify for the all India knock-out stages beginning on April 2. Tripura needed a win with a bonus point and had to wait for Jharkhand to concede a bonus point against Bengal to qualify. But once umpires Nikhil Patwardhan and Amardeep Singh Pathania called off the match following a second inspection, Tripura's match at Maligaon against Assam lost significance and was called off soon after. And while the Bengal players waited for the groundsmen to do their work, a visit to the Guwahati zoo in the afternoon and a cruise on the Brahmaputra was planned as a holiday mood set in. Sourav Ganguly who had a good view of the ground from his hotel room rescheduled his evening flight and left in the morning itself. He did take a chance with the weather and had there been even a 20-over match played between Bengal and Jharkhand, the positive vibes he had sent out to the selectors by coming here to play in the first place after being dropped from the one-day team, would have been neutralised by the criticism. “With the India team winning in Australia, Ganguly did not have any motivation to play. I came here to see him bat but he scored only five in the last match and today he left before the match,” a fan said. Ganguly will be playing East Zone's first match of the Deodhar Trophy against South in Hyderabad on March 14, which follows a two-day fitness camp in Bangalore on March 8 for the forthcoming South Africa series. He will go back to Bangalore on March 17 to attend a national team meeting and so will not be available for East's second Deodhar match. Bonus point sees Saurashtra through (by- K R Guruprasad in Pune) Saurashtra inched ahead of Baroda by one point to stand second in the West Zone One-dayers for the Ramakant Desai Trophy and qualify for the knock-out stages. Both Saurashtra and Baroda were tied at four points as they took on Gujarat and Maharashtra, respectively, here on Wednesday. While Saurasthra chased Gujarat's 231 in 38.3 overs to earn a bonus point that took their tally to nine, Baroda's narrow two-run win over Maharashtra denied them a bonus point and they totalled eight points, to stand third in the list followed by Maharashtra with seven points and Gujarat with three points. Mumbai, with a win over Maharashtra in their last league match on Monday, had already regained the Ramakant Desai Trophy that they had conceded to Maharashtra last year. Saurashtra bowlers, four of them picking up two wickets each, restricted Gujarat to a low total of 231 at the Deccan Gymkhana ground. Saurashtra's Cheteshwar Pujara scored an unbeaten 109 in 108 balls and Sagar Jogiyani 67 from 60 balls to lead their team's successful chase. In the other match at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana ground, Maharashtra, needing a win, came heartbreakingly close to overtake Baroda's mammoth total of 366. Needing nine runs from the last over, Maharashtra were not quite out of the rut with their last pair of batsmen at the crease. Baroda captain Pinal Shah threw the ball to Yusuf Pathan, who ended with five for 78, to bowl the last over. Noor Khan took a single of the first ball to give strike to Ajinkya Joshi. The next ball, Joshi steered the ball to short third-man. Azhar Bilakhia misfielded and the ball went to boundary. Joshi took a single in the next ball. With three runs needed of three balls, Khan tried to drive Pathan but missed the ball, which hit his pads. Wicketkeeper Pinal went up in a vociferous appeal for leg before, and the batsman was given out. Baroda's celebrations were shortlived when they found that Saurashtra have earned a bonus and qualified for the knockout stages. Earlier, Maharashtra's Ameya Shrikhande (124) and Nikhil Paradhkar (71) built up the innings but could not take their team to win. SCORECARD: Baroda: 366 for 9 in 50 overs (A Bilakhia 53, R Solanki 61, R Pawar 79, P Shah 60; Fallah 2/52) beat Maharashtra 363 all out in 49.4 oves (Shrikhande 124, N Paradkar 71; Y Pathan 5 for 74) Gujarat: 230 all out in 47.2 overs (Niraj Patel 51, Sunny Patel 52) lost to Saurashtra 231 in 38.4 overs (C Pujara 109; S Jogiyani 67; Solanki 2/49) Jaffer to lead West Zone Pune: Mumbai batsman Wasim Jaffer will lead the West Zone team for the Deodhar Trophy to be played between March 14 to 26. Pujara? Dhawan? No, I'm talking about the most complete batsman in Indian domestic cricket right now. Facking WZ selectors - or probably the push from Baroda/Gujarat/the non Bombay states. HOW GODDAMN RETARDED DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO LEAVE AMOL OUT? Especially when a useless FTB like Kedhar Jadhav who'll never amount to much more than a journeyman is picked in the batting instead? (BTW, Dhawan's almost a sure fire shot in the NZ side. Fear not Amits)
Amol yes. But don't you think it has been unfair to Pujara too?
