I started hating him in those away tours to Aus/NZ/Eng where he didn't any chance to Varun Aarun, UYadav or an y new players.. We lost 5 ODIs, we lost almost every test, yet he kept giving the new ball to Vinay Kumar game after game and that pissed me off so much.. Also, he made sure his chuddy buddy Jadeja played every single game of 4 T20 world cups even though we didn't win even a single match of supersixes match of those worldcups... also, his team CSK has the fastest Indian bowler in his team, yet he gave him a combined total of 1 game in 3 years.. in that game he played, he bowled 2 balls above 150..

 

 

Also, the most important game which only person mention, a test match against Windies, where we need 160 in 40 overs and he threw in the towel rather than winning that game..we scored 73-3 and went for draw..

All the high of winning the world cup was washed away after that England tour , where we failed to win a single game. 

 

And then after the Australia tour , we got labelled (rightfully)  as serial home track bullies and all the credit for our World cup win was taken away. 

 

And then getting knocked out by Bangladesh in the Asia cup just sealed the deal for me.  Just stopped watching Cricket altogether . Even the world T20 didn't get me back . 

 

And when I finally decided to get back we lost to Pakistan at home. 

 

And then champions trophy 2013 happened. 

I am not a fan of Dhoni’s batting and like every other Indian fan I feel frustrated when I see his tuk tuk batting and still being hailed as the greatest finisher in the game. His batting prowess has diminished over the last few years and he has frustrated millions by becoming a overtly safe player.

 

However I agree with the fact that this team needs him. He was the man who revived the game at the world t20 by bringing in the youngsters and out of the box thinking. He made the team clinical and confident enough of winning the 2011 World Cup. It was a different team before he became captain. He mentored players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He still is one of the fittest cricketers around and the sharpest hands behind the wicket. And more than that he is the reason behind the confidence behind this Indian cricket team which is by far the most consistent team in all formats of the game right now.

 

We as fans have the right question his intent (like the England game, the Windies test match in 2011, the white washes in eng and Aus after that, and many other nervous last ball finishes). But I am sure he knows he has not always got his calculations right but he trusts his judgement no matter what and that is the on the major reasons the Indian team is where it is today. 

 

Should we not respect that he is one of the best things that happened to Indian cricket while criticising him. Everyone has faults and so does he but he has been instrumental in changing the Indian team from potential passionate players who lost on the big stage to professional world beaters with the help of Kohli and the young brigade. Don’t be a blind fan but  Give the man the credit he deserves. He is one of the biggest legends of the Indian cricket if not the biggest.
