In the press conference Kohli has said he can bowl...but on a serious note he has 8 International wickets and you all be surprised to see his scalps

because with his current skill level (which can improve only with regular practice), he will get smashed around.

Not sure why Kohli and Rohit completely stopped their bowling. Agreed they are not world beaters, but both could roll over their arms earlier. Our 2011 team had Sehwag, Raina, Yuvi, Sachin who could chip in with a over or two when required. It shows absolute thick headedness of current bunch and lazy bums. It is only fair the batsmen should try to develop secondary skill as these days the bowler's are expected to hold and score few runs.

Yuvi chipped in more than a few overs. He was basically a batting AR in that WC. And he was ably supported by part-timers like Raina, Sehwag and SRT.

 

Our bowlers are not capable of scoring runs (apart from Bhuvan) and our batsmen (barring Jadhav to some extent) do not bowl. This has become a team of specialists, with only pandya playing an all-round role.

So, this should have been taken lot more seriously as our team has basically become team of specialists. That is where the highest paid international coach should be monitoring and push the people to develop secondary skills. But unfortunately he is more interested in himself become all rounder in his physique. There should be proper planning atleast for 2023 WC India.

the worrying thing to me is that most of our next gen batsmen do not bowl at all, or bowl very very occasionally. KLR, Mayank, Iyer, Anmolpreet, Shaw, Gill, etc. Fortunately, I see that at least some of next gen bowlers do bat: Nagarkoti, Mavi, Rahul Chahar, Gopal, etc. I am hoping that at least some of our younger batsmen will try to develop their bowling a bit.

Yeah agree, seems there are some upcoming bowlers who can be competent with bat like Nagarkoti, Mavi, R. Chahar, Gopal, Gowtham etc. But fortunate thing is next WC is at our home. We will be playing in flat, slow, low bounce pitches. Still enough time is there, all the upcoming batsmen should be told to start roll over their arms. Even if 2 batsmen are going to be decent and provide with 2 or 3 overs each, it will be plus. But TM should be aware and planning for this. But I doubt our TM are so smart. Imagine how hard it is going to be to send out a message to all players/batsmen in Ranji to develop secondary skill if they have intention to represent India at international level. Frankly for a country as big as India and the craze for this sport, there should be atleast 2 or 3 replacements for each role.

I feel that batsman have begun to focus more on fielding at the expense of bowling. Look at Kohli and Kohli Jr (Gill) - they are both excellent batsmen and fielders, but do not bowl. Whereas in the olden days, people like Sehwag and Ganguly were not good fielders but could bowl. Of course, there were exceptions like Yuvi (in earlier days) and Raina, who did all three.

 

I hope that we can return to the days of "three-dimensional" cricketers, i.e. players who excel in batting/bowling and fielding and can contribute something in the 3rd arena (bowling/batting).

There will be a time when you will need to be a multiple faceted cricketer.  For example, a fast bowler must be able to bowl spin as well when required.  Every bowler will need to develop different bowling actions for pace and spin.  A spinner should be able to bowl some medium pace as well.  Need to develop such cricketers who can bowl both pace and spin, a pacer who can bowl spin as well or a spinner who can bowl medium pace permitting the conditions.  Same for batsmen. They must be able to bowl.

indeed, it is highly unfair to compare the two of them. especially in FC, ganguly has 5-wkt hauls and everything. similarly, in ODIs, he has a 5-wkt haul.
