Basically top order collapsed in raining cloudy conditions and it has happened before.  Such conditions are very unlikely and let's just say India got struck by lightning again in this WC.  India knew what was coming and had a day break in between to prepare as well, the plans to counter the conditions and opposition were poor and execution was there for all to see. India's team was actually not a settled one especially the middle order. The tactics were poor and India got its nemesis of testing pace conditions early on.  Actually, this was a top order failure..middle order of Pant, Pandya, Dhoni, Jadeja all got starts. Inexperience and lack of game awareness brought out the wickets of Pant and Pandya.  

 

The other glaring area is the team composition and change and chopping of players in a very reactive manner rather than a proactive manner. If Kohli is the main decision maker here, then it is very poor judgement of him in reading the playing conditions, team selection,  and nurturing upcoming players.

 

How many ICC knockouts does a player get to play in a career?  Very few.  How does one approach them?  A lot of it is the mental state and preparing yourself and the other would obviously be the practice of playing in knockouts.  That's where playing multi team series like Asia Cup even they they have lost their sheen still have their purpose.  

 

Another thing is for the players to actually embrace that they are playing a knockout and not just another game and be prepared for it mentally.  The rest is basically chance.  You can practice all your life for the WC and still flunk it in the end.  Even here, India dominated the tournament and exited at the first instance in the knockout.

Things wont improve. From 2007 till 2016 when Dhoni was captain, he made sure he picked middle order players and openers who can rotate strike well ( less dot ball) like Yuvi and Raina. Dot ball kings like Sehwag, Ganguly, Dravid  who were unable to rotate strike quickly etc were let go after 35 years of age bluntly. Rohit was unable to rotate strike in middle order and hence was pushed to opening.

 

Now look at current middle order and openers ( Rahul): Dhoni, Pant, Pandya. Pant , Rahul and Pandya were only interested in hitting 4 s and not rotate strike well. Dhoni is a lot worse actually and must be dropped. Only Jadeja can rotate strike well. Because of this poorstrike rotation only we were 60 Runs after 20 overs yesterday. We cannot win championships if we cant minimize dot balls.

 

On the other hand Look at champion player Smith. Aus were 14/3 similar to India.Smith started with strike rate of low 20s , took terrific singles, minimized dot balls and came into form with a 50 and  strike rate of 77.

Reducing dot balls is really critical to get out of rut and run into form. Yuvraj and Raina was able to do this so well along with old Dhoni.Yuvraj also tweeted about this yesterday. 

 

With all the new players in Indian team who are dot ball kings like Rahul, Pant, Pandya, I don’t see this team becoming champions unless this issue is changed.

 

Also left right combination of batters and bowlers are also important to throw bowlers off guard.Just my 2 cents.

We  always choked in major tournaments as long as the focus was on individual records and centuries. Senior SRT used to lead the way in this - resting on mountains of useless runs only to promptly go into a hole in knockouts. Now we are reliving it with Rohit and Kohli. Our memorable wins always comes when the focus was on team success with an able captain leading the way when the going gets tough. we have seen it in 1983, 2007 and 2011.
